SPOT from Boston Dynamics - What is this robotic dog for?

e14phil
e14phil over 5 years ago

If you have been following Boston Dynamics and their (dubious robot torture) trials, you might have seen that SPOT the robotic dog has popped up for preorder sales.

My question to you is what uses can you think of for this, obviously not cheap, robotic companion?

Spot is an agile mobile robot that you can customize for a wide range of applications. The base platform provides rough-terrain mobility, 360 degree obstacle avoidance, and various levels of navigation, remote control and autonomy. You can customize Spot by adding specialized sensors, software and other payloads. Early customers are already testing Spot to monitor construction sites, provide remote inspection at gas, oil and power installations, and in public safety.  Spot is in mass production and currently shipping to select early adopters.  Find out more about using Spot in your application by visiting us at https://www.BostonDynamics.com/Spot .

In the video - 90 minutes. Not long - my dog weighs 29kg, goes all day on 350g of dry dog food and anything she finds, and is much faster (but has a mind of her own ). MK

It probably is not cheap, so likely uses I could see would be for rescue or military. It would be useful to crawl along broken ducting and through buildings to get vital supplies to trapped people e.g. water, food, medicines. Such a scenario could be after an earthquake or mine collapse. For military you can just see it delivering life-saving medical supplies to a unit that is under heavy fire or again civilian casualties.

They were used for the Black Mirror episode called MetalHead I recall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalhead_(Black_Mirror)

    ....very scary.
