COVID19-What's Going On in Your Community?

Curious to hear directly from folks around the world, what's the response in your community to the COVID19 crisis?

Here is my status:

  • Just east of St. Louis Missouri in Illinois.  Population 30,000.
  • All schools closed
  • All restaurants closed with exception of curbside, online orders and fast food drive throughs
  • All small businesses not food or essentials related are closed
  • Must stay sheltered in place at home
  • Gas stations and grocery stores are still open
  • To drive around, you are to have a formal permit provided by your employer to print and put in your vehicle windshield or be going to a grocery store
  • Essential industry like refining has remote workers - site staffing is cut to minimum per Process Safety Management policy
  • We have had one case reported in the community, but several in St. Louis.  One death.
  • Underlying concern across the United States is not sufficient ICU beds and ventilators should we see a surge like Italy (who actually has a better bed/1000 residents ratio)

See ya',

Sean

In Chicago,  I imagine its like a lot of other places.  I am lucky to live within walking distance of a Pharmacy and Grocery Store but outside of that people are staying in.  Pritzer, the governor, ordered Chicagoans on Friday to stay at home till April 7, however all essential businesses (food, grocery, pharmacies, banks, etc) will remain open.  For the last week we have worked remotely from our homes but this drives home the seriousness of the situation.

I am hearing reports from St. Louis, where I'm from and most of my family lives, and it sounds similar to the situation here.  I caught a bit of the press conference on Friday where we were told we needed to stay home and appreciated the fact that they brought in doctors to explain the science of why they are doing what they are doing.  One of the doctors talked about two cities, St. Louis and Philadelphia, that had two different responses the last time something like this happened (before any of us were alive) and how both cities took very different tactics.  St. Louis shut down completely and Philadelphia didn't.  St. Louis recovered quicker than Philadelphia which was hit terribly.

I think we all got to do our part to live smart and responsibly.  These are scary times but that doesn't mean we need to live in fear if we can help it.  Lots of things like reading, watching movies, and listening to music can be done from home.  We're all in this together and if we pull out it will be because we did it together.
