COVID19-What's Going On in Your Community?

Curious to hear directly from folks around the world, what's the response in your community to the COVID19 crisis?

Here is my status:

  • Just east of St. Louis Missouri in Illinois.  Population 30,000.
  • All schools closed
  • All restaurants closed with exception of curbside, online orders and fast food drive throughs
  • All small businesses not food or essentials related are closed
  • Must stay sheltered in place at home
  • Gas stations and grocery stores are still open
  • To drive around, you are to have a formal permit provided by your employer to print and put in your vehicle windshield or be going to a grocery store
  • Essential industry like refining has remote workers - site staffing is cut to minimum per Process Safety Management policy
  • We have had one case reported in the community, but several in St. Louis.  One death.
  • Underlying concern across the United States is not sufficient ICU beds and ventilators should we see a surge like Italy (who actually has a better bed/1000 residents ratio)

See ya',

I at Penang, Malaysia. Penang is a state with 1.77 million population with electronics manufacturing as the main economy activity- we are pretty much the silicon valley of Malaysia. i stay at Bukit Mertajam [1], somewhat outskirt with 212k population. Bukit Mertajam is the country's 22nd biggest city by population [2]. We have country locked down with movement control order (MCO) since 18 March 2020. Prior to the locked down, there are a lot of last minutes work to do after the locked down itself has been announced causing me very hectic in the initial few days. Some multinational corporations (Jabil, Plexus...etc) are given special permission to continue manufacturing operations but never really announced properly in the newspaper. Some of the supporting industry supporting those MNCs are forced to continue working. however, majority of the population is locked down at home. Police, assisted by armed forces, are having roadblocks at major roads and highway entrance to restrict movement. Only vital industry is allowed to continue operating -> logistic, food, utility

as my work is not those under vital industry, i am working from home and i can't continue with some work i have with MNCs

it looks like the number of covid19 victims has not yet peaked in my nation, and yesterday, the MCO is extended 2 weeks to 14 April 2020.

time flies, it has been fully 8th day since i stay put at home, not even wander more than 10m from my gate. I have started to realize in fact working from home i pretty much can do most of my jobs. in fact it helps save traveling time (each day i spent like 2 hours traveling), saving petrol and saving the environment.

one possible outcome, i envision, is company start to provide a few days wfh in the future in view of achieving equal and spending less nature resources.

May the force be with all of us to battle this outbreak.

Thanks for the informative replay.  It's amazing how the world is having such a similar response.  Probably couldn't have happened 10 years ago before every kid and grandmother had a small computer in there hand.

I think this proves that if aliens invade from outer space, we will all get along.

    See ya',
