Cannibalising components

I have a few Sonos devices that won't work anymore so I thought I'd take one apart today to see what's in it.  These are self-contained units so have a 240V power supply, audio codecs, wifi cards, ethernet controllers and so on.  All the supporting passives: resistors, capacitors, electrolytics, inductors, crystals.  There's even a 32-bit RISC microprocessor from Renesas in there.  The power supply card converts from 240Vac to a dual 3.3V and 14.8V DC output.  I can pretty much guarantee I won't get around to cataloguing the parts on them.  I'd assume that given these are 15+ years old, the electrolytic capacitors aren't worth keeping.  Other passives I could easily remove with a heat gun but then I'd be left with measuring and sorting which is 50-50. I'd have to be very bored.

I could put all these PCBs in the parts bin or the dustbin.  If I do the former, what's the chance I'll get around to re-using any of it in your experience?

On the other hand, if anyone can use this stuff I have 2xSonos amps, 1xPlay and 1xbridge, all of which have been de-activated so can't be used as-is.

I've got a ZP90 that was deactivated too. I doubt they're worth keeping as components. The only real plus would be if someone bothers to get new open source firmware on there. By the way, when did you…

It worked! Got a £199 voucher to spend and bought a Sonos One. Thanks for the info Fred.

By the way, when did you go for the trade-in? I did back when they were threatening to make all your other components non-upgradeable. Now you get your 30% off and don't have to brick your old gear. I complained and got a £199 voucher - either for a free Play 1 or towards other kit. Not sure what to do with it yet, as I don't really need any more Sonos gear.

I Did go for the trade in, yes, and got an amp, 2 play one and a move.  Still have £30 to spend.  I don’t follow what you said: what did you complain about?

I Did mine back in Jan as well.  All my Sonos kit became unsupported so it all got bricked.  I guess if there’s nothing of use in them I’ll just take them to the tip.  But I might see if I can get some offer from Sonos first - you literally just emailed them and asked them to unbrick the ZP90?

This was my email. They replied that it couldn't be "unbricked" (though it's not been powered up - yeah right) but offered me the voucher.

I recently elected to take advantage of your offer to retire my ZP90 for a discount on new products. I was rather forced to do so as I did this at a time (22 Jan) when the company stance was that all other devices would not get upgrades. I understand your position on this has now changed.

I am just asking whether it is OK to turn on and continue using my ZP90 which was marked as "deactivated" on 22/02/2020. (I understand the new requirements for it to be on a seperate network, etc.)

I hope you have some luck. Before you dump the devices it might be worth looking for a JTAG port first.

Thanks Fred, I might give that a go!  I may have a go at getting some things of the board as I run no stock of inductors or crystals so they may be handy at some point.
