Hey EVERYONE!!,

I am on a new quest this year to explore, learn, and develop with the Arduino platform and components. I have already seen a few tutorials by Jeremy Blum on YouTube and know that the Arduino can be used to create light shows. This is my main quest! To create an awesome Christmas Light Show as well as learn other possibilities that I might just use around the house here. I am experienced in computers and have an intermediate understanding with programming(MS Visual Studio - last used in 2005). My problem will most likely be learning the electrical side of Arduino and how to put it all together. I hope I can really learn a lot and create this by November. Working full-time like we all do, it can be difficult to manage. I look forward to making the best effort and learning and collaborating with perhaps some of you on issues and concerns. Thanks for listening! Let's have a great year!

    David,

Just something I remembered. A friend put together a light show for a local band, and was having a lot of trouble with background RF noise, caused by the switching of the lights, getting picked up by the amplifiers.  His solution was to monitor the power input lines, and perform the switching (on or off) of light banks at the zero crossing.  This eliminated any power surge that occurred at the switching event, and got rid of all the pops on the line.

    Jack.

    Hi David,
First of all, Welcome to the community !
It will be a great thing if you make a blog post regarding your project on arduino.. as it will be helpful because you are starting arduino from scratch.. So people like me can learn from your experience on how to start with arduino and most importantly how we can relate/make an application based on vs platform.
Moreover people here in this community are experts, so they will keep on guiding you in right direction until you reach your goal.

A very Happy New Year to you !
    Good Luck !!

Hi David, and welcome to the dark side image.  Arduino is a great choice for tinkering with light shows, because it can be as simple or complex as you have time to invest. The other quality I love about them are all the "shields" that are available for nearly every imaginable task.  Most of them are as simple as plug and play for hardware hookup as well.  You will need to become familiar with the function libraries that simplify the actuation of switches and interface with the timers.

Welcome to the club, and best of luck with your enterprise.

    Jack

    Hi David,

Are you aware of Jeremy's  book " Exploring Arduino" I found it to be an excellent guide to many of the capabilities of the Arduino. He did a good job with teaching the electronics as well as the programming. Check out his site if you are interested.

Welcome to the Community!  I have no doubt that you'll accomplish this task with the help here from the other members.  I would really enjoy to see your progress; and I'm sure you'll see the other members cheering you on in your progress as well each month to accomplish your goal by November 2016!  Let us know how we can help you!  Just some initial thoughts here, if you'd like to start a blog in the Arduino group documenting your progress that could be a really fun way for people to follow along in your journey!
