Proximity sensor to control rheostat for 12vdc - Looking for advice

I'm very new to audrino and am frankly intrigued with it's depth of possibilities.

Could someone suggest a config that would control the intensity of a LED string as you moved towards and away from a proximity sensor. From the Youtube videos I've been looking at, it looks as though a capacitive proximity sensor might be appropriate solution.

I'm eager to jump into this project ... I'd just appreciate if someone could recommend the right audrino kit to get and how I might accomplish the rheostat incorporation piece.

I'm a graduate art student and I've constructed lightboxes using an led strip powered by a 12v battery. I'd like to have have these boxes be very dim until someone approaches the lightbox (hanging on the wall) then it would become progressively brighter as the person got closer.

Thanks everyone. I look forward to learning a ton.

A simple ultrasonic range sensor should work well, it only cost a few $$$ and can measure down to a few CM, up to several meters  like this one from ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R3.TR7.TRC1.A0.H0.Xultrasonic+se&_nkw=ultrasonic+sensor+arduino&_sacat=0
