Electronics Begininer...  Where do I start?

Hi everyone.  Electronics is something I'm interested in but have no clue where to begin learning.  Do I go get one of those old radio shack kits and start doing the little projects they have?  I'm pretty amazed at the things on here and would like to at least start learning some basics.  Thanks for the help.

    Hi Brian,

I agree with Don that it is important to start in the books to learn the basics. You can do the Radio Shack kits, have fun, and learn very little as they many times tell you what to do but don't explain why you are doing it. They are designed to entertain not educate. It is better to start with a book and as you go do experiments to verify that you have understand what you have learned in the book. If you are studying resistors, for example, it is important to hook up some resistors and measure the different effects that you get with respect to voltage and current. I have been happy with a book called: "Practical Electronics for Inventors, 3rd Edition" by Paul Scherz and Simon Monk. It has good basic electronics information combined with suggested circuits that can be tried out. Here is a very good web site with a basic electronics tutorial as well. The web site also incorporates good demonstration projects that compliment the material that is being taught.

Reading this great advice on what should you do for electronics also helps other, including me, I'm also intrigued with the whole pcb board and electronic making world.... as a hobby and a possible thing to teach my teenage kid as something we could do as a family too for creating drones, sensors, robots, even 3d printers and other machines... I'm definitely looking into those sites and books they recommend... good luck with the endeavor, never give it up, also a ben heck follower!!!
