    There are a bunch of options which includes the software that came in the accompanying CD

    I usually use matlab to capture packets so that's something to look into. ..

    I'll look into MATLAB, thanks.  But I mainly want to view RF spectrum for the purpose of reducing EMI and spurious harmonics and for RF related projects [such as the solar powered FM transmitter I'm putting together to broadcast the sound of our local river so we can use our living room FM radio to listen to it image].

    I think most of the radio receiver software (SDR-Sharp etc) for those dongles have a waterfall display and spectrum display, for a segment of spectrum (maybe a couple of MHz, I can't recall) so you can center to your desired part of the spectrum and observe it using that.

    Yeah, I played with that, today. But, I'm looking for something a little more versatile, with greater/easier control over the frequency range, wider range, etc -- the kind of facility that software dedicated to this function would provide.
