The Best (and Worst) films about Engineers?

jlucas
jlucas over 9 years ago

Given that engineers are responsible for many of the most exciting innovations in human history, it's little wonder that they're often featured in Hollywood movies. Whether it's as the obligatory 'brains' in an action/adventure ensemble or as the subject of an Oscar-baiting biopic, engineers are a common sight on celluloid.

The latest addition to the canon of films explicitly focused on engineering is 'Hidden Figures', a forthcoming biopic of the pioneering physicist, space scientist, and mathematician Katherine Johnson who, along with her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, made a crucial but often overlooked contribution to the American 'Space Race' of the 1960s.

The problem with putting engineering on film is that while it can be an exciting job, it isn't always a particularly glamorous one. This means that Hollywood productions often have to take major creative liberties in order to make engineering stories interesting and accessible to the casual viewer - occasionally simplifying or wildly distorting the scientific work that goes behind it.

For this week's discussion, we'd like to hear about some of your favourite - and least favourite - films about or heavily featuring engineers. Which films do you believe do the best job of accurately portraying the profession? And which ones got it painfully wrong?

To kick things off, here are five of the most celebrated films that feature engineering in some form.

A Beautiful Mind (2001)

image

Russell Crowe was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of mathematician and Nobel Laureate John Nash in this 2001 biopic from director Ron Howard. The film was widely praised, although drew some criticism for making major divergences from the facts of Nash's life, and watering down the discussions of Nash's pioneering work.

Apollo 13 (1995)

image

One of the most iconic and oft-quoted movies of all time, Apollo 13 manages the tricky balancing act of depicting the heroism of the real-life engineers who safely brought the crew of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission back to earth, without sacrificing the technical accuracy behind the story .

October Sky (1999)

image

An early breakthrough role for actor Jake Gyllenhaal, October Sky is based on the bestselling autobiographical novel of the same name by former NASA engineer Homer Hickam. Although only a modest success on release, it has been praised for its inspiring story and positive depiction of a bright young science student.

Contact (1997)

image

Based on the 1985 novel by Carl Sagan, Contact presents a more thoughtful and philosophical approach to the science fiction genre, starring Jodie Foster as a SETI scientist who discovers a signal that appears to be a message from an extraterrestrial being.

The Imitation Game (2014)

image

Although criticised in some quarters for the questionable accuracy of its story, this blockbuster based on the life and work of Alan Turing - who decrypted German intelligence codes for the British government during World War II - was a major critical and commercial success, with star Benedict Cumberbatch particularly praised for his depiction of the tormented cryptanalyst, who tragically took his own life in 1954 after undergoing chemical castration as a result of his homosexuality.

Have we missed your favourite film about engineers? What about the ones that get it spectacularly wrong? Let us know your picks for the best and worst engineering movies in the comments section below.

To CH: IDK the name of the Movie, but the plot involved a Rogue Planet that comes near the Earth. Shades of the US AM Radio Show "Coasttocoastam.com"'s Planet X, fantasies.  AAR there was this Claude Rains-type character (the old eccentric scientist) who had the solution. When he reveals it was "..the Calculus..." Really? The film was dubbed from some European Language IDK, but it too was Corny! BTW WRT the recently concluded HBO series "The Night Of" a Question. Q. What was the incongruity between the Main Character Nasir "Naz" Khan and the First Scene-First Episode? Hint: It is about Stokes' Theorem.

To CH: My mistake, I meant the Acronym IDK = "I Don't Know" Not as the Movie Title. This a Case in Point, that I always drag-out. Comment(ers) should post their Physical Location (The Country is sufficient). This way people can use the jargon/lingo that the intended audience can understand/know-about.

BTW to CS: That movie "Prime" looks interesting. Too bad it is only available on the (USA) Netflix Streaming. If it were on Netflix Disc, I could view it (Time-Shifted) BTW2 the Promo Pic that you posted for Prime (the movie) looked like an Isolated Bathroom Stall. I half-expected to see the Foot of ex-US-Senator Ted Stevens drop down. (A little US Political Humor here)

BTW don't go crazy about the Title of the movie about the Rouge Planet. I would swear Claude Rains was in it. It was B/W and the Space Ships land intact upright. Intact not like the present-day Space-X which land Boosters-Only on a Barge

THX. I guess we found it about the same time. BUT DIG THIS. Luckily we either "hit" the same IMDB Server OR the info across Servers are consistent. I usually hold a Sat evening Phone call w/ my old SU (Syracuse) Roommate. We were on the phone and accessing the SAME ITEM at www.amazon.com

The picture of the (electronic) item he saw had Four Antenna(s), while my Pic had Only Three Antenna(s). we can only explain it b/c Maybe we were directed to different Servers I am in NY NY. He is in Needham Ma. Strange But True.

Until I got to this list I was proud that I'd seen a lot of the movies on this thread!

This thread is dangerous, it will cause a lot of evenings being spent watching more movies : )

Which ones would you recommend (I've seen only a few here, like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Destination Moon, the Jules Verne ones, War of the Worlds, etc).

It wasn't always the case. When I was a kid, our teacher came in to class one Monday and was super-enthusiastic, asking us all if we'd watched the awesome weekend film on TV. We were all pumped up, we'd all enjoyed it. It truly was awesome. He said it was a movie that really made you think. We thought so too! He said it was one of the best movies of all time. We also thought it was up there.

He was so in love with it. He said it was possibly _the_ absolute best film ever created. We looked at each other. Sure, it was a great film, but surely there was the possibility of even greater movies. We were not exactly sceptical, but just felt that the possibility existed that even better movies might be out there that we hadn't seen yet. He was of course talking about Space Odyssey, but we'd all assumed he was talking about The Goonies : )

From recent(ish) films I did really enjoy Interstellar. In the poor movies bucket I thought The Martian was weak : (

From older movies I saw Colossus: The Forbin Project the other day, it was ok-ish. I actually liked the original Westworld : )

Not a movie but still clearly engineering-related : ) the Beastie Boys used to film their videos in oscill-o-scope : )

Yes, the List is Dangerous. Maybe I should forgo actually watching the Movies, and just read the NYTimes (NY Times newspaper) Review of any Movie. Akin to me watching the ESPN Highlights of NFL/College (AMERICAN) Football Games. Sure saves me time.I agree a Thumbs-Up to Interstellar and the Thumbs-down to "The Martian". Was partially through TM when it premised that the Chinese was going to Save Matt Damon-Character's Ass. I stopped watching then & There, The Script was obviously written to gain audience & favor from Movie-goers in China. I don't blame the producers. They are just following the Money. And this coming from a Chinese-American. Then there is the Movie "Inception". One of my all-time favorites. I was tempted to change my Moniker to "Cobb" -the character played by Leonardo deCaprio(sp?). Cobb in the movie "steals" Ideas. That is what I do for a Living. And I look similar to deCaprio. LOL
