Is it possible to make my own SCSI or LPT CD-ROM?

Question

I would like to make my own SCSI or LPT CD-ROM drive from an old IDE(PATA or ATA) CD-ROM drive. So I would need some sort of chip to convert the signals. It could be an Arduino or ATMEGA. The drive should work like a Backpack CD-ROM drive: https://youtu.be/qex_6pWzuog or similar!

You can buy one but it's not cheap:

It's often possible to buy converters for current parts very cheaply but very very hard to get the chips they are based on if you just want a few.

If you are technically competent it can be done with an FPGA or fast micro controller.

Your best bet might be to scour Ebay and the like for a cheap ready made converter.
