RFID etc type required

malcolm51
malcolm51 over 5 years ago

Hopefully someone will be able to answer my question.

I need an UNPOWERED device to use in a security project.

RFID seems to fit the bill.... cheap, reliable etc.... powered bluetooth doesn't (obviously the control circuitry is powered, just not the "key" device)

my problem is I can find close range RFID easily... and expensive long distance systems.

what I need is a range of 10cm min to 1mtr max.... NO FURTHER than 1 mtr is important.

surely one of the geniuses, out there, will be able to help.

Hi Malcolm, I think you may need to come up with an alternative non-RFID solution, but I don't know what options there are, because I don't know your use-case. The comment " NO FURTHER than 1 mtr is important…

    Hi Malcolm,

The comment "NO FURTHER than 1 mtr is important" rings alarm bells unfortunately.

You'll find it extremely hard to placate, or prove or perhaps even implement this to people's satisfaction.

Many customers will not take it seriously if they hear such RFID will be used.

Having said that, long range RFID is an incredibly useful technology - just I would not even consider it for bringing to the table for secure, sensitive customers, because it's one thing to have technology that meets a spec, but another thing to convince sensitive customers.

Just from a practical point of view, you can use any long range RFID system but dial down the power or deliberately design antennas with reduced performance. No guarantee it cannot be exploited from a distance of course (hence why it rings alarm bells for sensitive customers). I can think of other ways to restrict to a region (not precisely 1 metre), but not all methods are advisable in many/most countries.
