Not sure where to begin

Hi all,

I am really just a baby tech fiend that is wandering around out of his depth and I was wondering where to start with hardware hacking. I have a raspberry pi and some minor knowledge of c# and python it would greatly appreciated if someone could give me an inexpensive project or something to start out with.

Hi Matt,
How about something like this for a software project ...
Start by displaying a clock and date.
When that is working, display a whole calendar.
When that is working add a picture for each date.
Click on a date and see its picture.
The picture for a day could be someone whose birthday falls on that day or an event that happened on that day.
For a hardware project you could figure out how to make the Pi dispense a candy or a business card in response to a button push or snap of the fingers.
