Just want to make a comment on here about the child who was handcuffed for bringing in his home electronics project to school in the USA:

(http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/09/16/they-thought-it-was-a-bomb-ahmed-mohamed-texas-9th-grader-arrested-after-bringing-a-home-built-clock-to-school/?tid=sm_tw)

This really isn't going to help encourage anyone to tinker with stuff and make things.

Please do all you can to help get tinkering into the mainstream.

The school said they ask students / staff to report anything that is or looks suspicious.

Please can we make tinkering with electronics look less suspcious and more mainstream?

Tweet and blog and share photos of your projects that look "suspicious" but actually do a useful job.

Thanks

Lucy

I'm guessing that jw0752 won't be invited to demo his testing box to that school

jw0752 test box is the ultimate movie prop, if displays are what is required ; ) He's got the analog and digital domain covered. Here's my clock, I didn't build it all, just the display portion, the controller…

I do agree that this on element14 really isn't going to attract mainstream attention. Perhaps Google+ might be the right place to post this sort of message. We're doing our bit to introduce making electronics…

What happened is really sad, and must've been a traumatising experience for Ahmed.

But Ahmed is now being invited to the White House, Facebook, Microsoft and who knows what other companies. He's also being given a whole bunch of gifts, tools and what not, to stimulate him to continue making. It's very nice, don't get me wrong, but what about all the other young makers that remain unknown? Who will write about them? Who will sponsor their hobby?

It's starting to feel like everyone is trying to get some publicity out of this unfortunate event.

Perhaps, but how will they find their way to element14? Element14 is not present at events à la Maker Faire where they are most likely to bump into eachother.

Perhaps they could fly someone to New York who will wander around with an Element14 backpack?

It is rather fortunate for him, depite the ordeal.

It's sad that there has ne coverage by the media about how they are going to fix the problem (the over-reaction).

Perhaps they hope it will all quietly go away ....
