Entry level electronics

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

My world collided with that of electronics when I bought my first Raspberry Pi. I wanted to learn how to hack through the GPIO ports (even bought a breadboard and an Arduino shield) and just then I realized, that the lack of schooling in electronics and engineering at all is probably a serious hold-back.

I know electronics is not particularly an area for noobs, but still there are common principles that can be followed more easily. I was delaying the search for more accessible resources, until the other day I saw this on Kickstarter. I'm pretty sure, this can't be the only one or the best possibility, but what I wonder is, if it is good enough (at least as a promise)? I also realize that, since it is in fund-raising period, no one has actually tested it and can share their experience.

And while on Kickstarter I noticed another project. This one leads me to the entry-level problem from another angle - take them and teach them while they're young. So this kit seems suitable for children, doesn't it?

I know these projects are at the end of their fund-raising period, but I'm sure one can have an impression pretty quickly, and share an opinion.

Best regards!

Not sure the text here would help a beginner at all. Besides, these only-slightly-interactive quiz questions feel no different to a book with questions at the end of each chapter. There are free resources…

Two good places for beginning electronics information are the ARRL manuals before the mid-eighties and military films from the era of what is called in the US as WWII. http://archive.computerhistory.org…

Here is a good early book on op-amps: http://www.ee.mut.ac.th/home/suriya/ebooks/OpAmp%20Applications%20Handbook%20-%20Analog%20Devices.pdf

There are free resources including projects on this site, save the $39 and spend the money on a nicer kit of components and a book maybe : )

I haven't read this one.  Barrie Gilbert strongly recommends it.  I will soon read it.

Many here would claim this topic is of diminishing utility, but I find it a pure gas:

Guys who know their jellybeans are nearly half as sexy as guys who know their op-amps.  How would I know?  I just do.

Knowing a couple retro processors before they caught the speculative execution and pipelining frenzy.

brings the sexy, but I would just try to get the drift rather than study it too intently.  These guys aren't big market players anymore.  But it may help to start nearer to the beginning.

Only if these things interest you.
