As we're getting to be in a better position with the tools we have to setup the groups on Verint, we are in the position that we can change the settings on groups all at once (yes, believe it or not, we didn't really have a good way of doing that before some development work 'out of the box').
What does this mean? What is joining a group? What're you talking about?

A number of groups on the Community are set to 'public open' which means that you can view them, but to comment, interact and be notified of content happening within them, you have to 'join them'

Due to the difficulties that members are having with participating in the Community, we are going to change every group to 'Joinless'.
"Hurray!" you may be saying, but this could also have consequences. For example, if you use the 'groups' view in your profile to 'bookmark' or navigate to the groups you've joined (for example here: /members/cstanton/groups ) this would no longer work, because the groups are 'joinless' you're no longer in them.
I also suspect that because you can't 'join' a group, you'd lose out on notifications, both live and in e-mail, as to what's happening in the group (your subscriptions, basically).
Another option, though I haven't thoroughly tested it, is to keep groups as 'public open' so you can still join them, but to tweak permissions so that you don't have to join them to participate in them, but you can join them at least for notifications - but we should really check if that's a possibility, and what this counts on is whether or not you, the members, join groups to be notified of what happens in them anyway?
