Posted something yesterday , did you see that?

Jan Cumps
Jan Cumps over 3 years ago

Yesterday I posted a reply to an older post. I think it wasn't in any of the notification streams.
I didn't see it on the home feeds, personal feed, personal activities, or on the points page.
When I run a query of all last week's posts, it's not there. I know it exists because I find it back via a targeted advanced search.

Asking my fellow members if you've seen a post from me, yesterday, about Arduino, DIN case and MOLEX antenna?
It contained photos of how to mount the one inside the other.

It would be good to know that I'm not talking to myself here.

You could do a screen capture with OBS, and share the recording. That also gives the opportunity to share it with the team and they can watch it in their own time, since we span timezones, etc.

I feel for you from your description. I experienced the Lost Effort Posting (LEP) syndrome, the first few weeks after the migrations. I write up responses including images and links and make the post…

I didn't see it, and I'm with the others in feeling I am missing quite a bit. I have also suffered from CITTA (comments into the Abyss) I think I have come across material that has no apparent views…

We're having problems with the 'jobs server' again that updates notifications, activities and widgets.

It's frustrating and causes problems like this.

cstanton, If it helps, I could do a screen share with the support team.
I think (read: don't actually know but think it anyway :) ) that this is a specific scenario not handled by one of the existing notifications & activity screens, and that I can replicate it.

    Hi Christopher,

Good idea to provide video captures.. however, just wondering, for this particular problem that Jan describes, isn't this a very well-known issue? It was raised very early on, and I guess from my perspective at least, I assumed it was being worked on (we were asked to provide ideas on how it could be resolved). I didn't re-raise it because I didn't want developers to think we were harassing : )

That's why my first reply is that it's the 'jobs server' again, which also handles search indexing.

As Jan's said that it's a specific scenario then I'm always open to it being something entirely unrelated and seeing evidence of the problem in case, rather than dismissing it.

As for re-raising or repeating issues, there's this option:
    image

Which increments when more people click it to show that it's still / a prevalent issue.

I'll bring it to the Feedback area. I posted it to the Members area because I wanted to ask the community members if they see updates.

    Hi Christopher,

I mean it's functionality missing (and always has been missing), it's not an issue with the jobs server again (if you mean it's an issue that has again occurred).

I'll add some info to the link that Jan raises, along with the screenshot of the suggestion we had a few months ago, because maybe this is an opportunity to address it in a way that could clean up that first page view.

Yeah as far as I'm aware, this is a duty of the 'jobs server'. When it's not overloaded, it notifies people, updates content widgets, activity lists, etc. When it is overloaded, it does some of the job, but not all, and it runs it on a schedule that is unbeknownst to me (for example every 6 hours, if it's not overloaded).

What I've had to do is escalate cases and evidence like this to the dev' team, and they're in turn throwing the evidence at our platform provider.

When we have dates and times of this happening we can grab logs.

Just to be sure we are talking about the same functionality.. if the jobs server was not overloaded, would Jan's comment on an old blog post, have appeared on the Recent Content page (screenshot below?).

The reason I ask, is that the screenshot shows that the list order is by a 'Created" date, and in the few months since the site has been up, I've never seen that order to be anything other than the order of blog (or forum post) date creation. It's never shown it sorted by comment date creation.

This is why it doesn't appear to be something that the jobs server already does, it actually seems to be missing functionality (or misconfigured). Has anyone ever seen the page (ever) sorted by date of comment, and not date of original blog or original forum post creation?

I think this is missing functionality, and it isn't a overload (e.g. performance) -related issue, unless I'm mistaken. I'm happy if I am mistaken, since then it will mean that the behavior which (I believe) many would like to see, including me, will be present, once the overload/performance issue is resolved. How is it known it is a performance issue, has the new site shown the list by order of comment at some point? If so, should I raise a bug that the column title should be 'Latest Activity' instead of 'Created' in that case?

I believe we have two different issues going on here Slight smile

The one where you're talking about 'recent content' not being updated when a comment happens, yes that's correct, and I believe that's an issue of the widget and we've discussed that one before.

The one where Jan isn't receiving any notifications of a comment? That's a jobs server problem, or a settings problem potentially (/members-area/support/f/forum/50719/reply-on-an-older-post-of-self---does-it-generate-notifications-or-get-on-home-screen-activities/196275#196275)

I'm simply de-tangling the comments and issues to see what we can do something about and what we can't and making sure it's the same or a repeated issue or a new issue.

And the dev' team are mostly not about today because of some USA based holiday I think, so no-one's around to check the jobs server until tomorrow.
