Powers of Deduction - What is this a picture of?

The forum has been a bit spotty lately, so I thought I would try injecting a little fun quiz to keep our brains ticking.

Can you identify what the picture is of? Can you identify all the components?

I wouldn't go nuts with Google searches just yet. Clue number one is that it was made before the Internet existed, so Google may not work.

You can treat it more like the game 20 questions. I will answer one or more questions per day, from any speculation that appears in the comments below, until the answer reveals itself.

Taking the hints from some previous guesses, my first guess would also be some sort of wired communication device.

RJ11 always points to voice because, telephone. S1 is probably a switch to turn the unit off to save the obvious 9V battery (COM is just the common pin of a 3-pn switch. The black box to the left of S1 might be a push to talk button. Isolation transformer to not get killed by the telephone line voltage.

I can literally smell the phenolic FR2 single sided boards getting warm and giving off their typical scent.

I have never powered this device on. This was definitely before Bluetooth and WiFi and cell phones.
