Powers of Deduction - What is this a picture of?

dougw
dougw over 2 years ago

The forum has been a bit spotty lately, so I thought I would try injecting a little fun quiz to keep our brains ticking.

Can you identify what the picture is of? Can you identify all the components?

I wouldn't go nuts with Google searches just yet. Clue number one is that it was made before the Internet existed, so Google may not work.

You can treat it more like the game 20 questions. I will answer one or more questions per day, from any speculation that appears in the comments below, until the answer reveals itself.

I would have said RJ12, as it has 6 contact points, not 4 (RJ11)

2 guesses.....lets you use sound card as a modem....but someone already guessed that... or hands free phone adapter like telemarketers use with headphone and mic jacks on the right, RJ on the left (from the rear, appears to be RJ12, but if only 4 contacts are inside, then RJ11)

That is correct there are 6 positions. There are only 2 contacts installed.

It reminds me a landline (telephone line) interface for live broadcast studios. Probably with a little preamplificator.

It looks like a device for covert phone call recording. Phone line interface on left, and one mono jack on right to trigger the tape recorder, and the other for audio output. It can be powered by a transformer or battery (which makes it easier to hide).
