Should a reviewer keep a $20K Oscilloscope?

scottiebabe
scottiebabe over 2 years ago

I am just putting the thought out there, that I think a reviewer keeping a $20K oscilloscope is too much.

When an automotive journalist reviews a vehicle, its my understanding typically they return the vehicle afterwards (perhaps that’s not always the case).

I have not seen a review on element14 that I believe is any way deserving of such a reward.

I do believe a reviewer should be rewarded in some form for taking the time and effort to produce a quality review. But I think the reward would have one less zero in its value.

I think there are a lot of other creative opportunities to help see the community grow and flourish.

I don’t intend to say anymore than this.

But I do hope you take a second look at how the terms and conditions for the MXO4 review are defined.

Just a thought...

I don't have a problem with the ethics or the practicalities of keeping the review devices. Producing a decent review is a time consuming task and in the case of some of the higher value items requires…

I wouldn't expect any difference, my point was that setting the youtube flag for sponsored content prevents adverts being shown and hence prevents earning revenue for the youtube creator.

I have pondered being on the receiving end of expensive equipment. Part of my struggle is self-depreciation. Why do I deserve such a reward compared to other contributors with more knowledge and experience…

I wonder if there is any incentive to let the members provide some input into who gets to review a fancy instrument. Not necessarily the definitive decision, just an additional factor in the decision. I can think of a few members I would like to see tackle this scope for example, but they probably won't even apply (and not because they wouldn't enjoy the scope or wouldn't put forth a good effort).

Maybe we could lobby or petition rscasny  about who we would like to see review some particular gear, although his job is tough enough without dealing with petitions.

I think we should definitely should have pity on  rscasny and the other Road Test selectors. It must be hard enough to choose already.

More seriously, you only need to think about the madness of public voting in reality TV shows to not want any aspect of E14 to go that way.

I'm happy with the present system.

Randall & E14 staff are the ones working with the vendor for the Road Test. The vendor is the customer of the Road Test, putting up their $$ for the feedbacks they target.

E14 staff and the vendor should select the applicant that best fits their needs. They have the prerogative to select nobody or add units if the multiple applicants are extremely qualified, IMHO.

Easy, this wasn't a I'm going to stand on my soapbox forever type of post.

Its a complicated topic, so I'm glad I said something.

In my opinion its a point where it starts to become a gray area, it isn't obvious there is either a problem or solution. So, I know and accept that it will just continue as business as usual.

I'm sure the e14 staff would love our feedback on forward looking opportunities for the selection process and ways to manage members disappointment when their application is rejected. But, probably not under these circumstances.
