Should a reviewer keep a $20K Oscilloscope?

scottiebabe
scottiebabe over 2 years ago

I am just putting the thought out there, that I think a reviewer keeping a $20K oscilloscope is too much.

When an automotive journalist reviews a vehicle, its my understanding typically they return the vehicle afterwards (perhaps that’s not always the case).

I have not seen a review on element14 that I believe is any way deserving of such a reward.

I do believe a reviewer should be rewarded in some form for taking the time and effort to produce a quality review. But I think the reward would have one less zero in its value.

I think there are a lot of other creative opportunities to help see the community grow and flourish.

I don’t intend to say anymore than this.

But I do hope you take a second look at how the terms and conditions for the MXO4 review are defined.

Just a thought...

I don't have a problem with the ethics or the practicalities of keeping the review devices. Producing a decent review is a time consuming task and in the case of some of the higher value items requires…

I wouldn't expect any difference, my point was that setting the youtube flag for sponsored content prevents adverts being shown and hence prevents earning revenue for the youtube creator.

I have pondered being on the receiving end of expensive equipment. Part of my struggle is self-depreciation. Why do I deserve such a reward compared to other contributors with more knowledge and experience…

The current RoadTest for an Oscilloscope has testing goals that require a certain level of knowledge skills.

Conduct a comprehensive set of performance tests in order to review its significant capabilities and features. The tests conducted should be of a highly technical nature that an experienced oscilloscope user would value.

A successful application for this RoadTest would be a challenge for a first-time RoadTester or someone with little experience. I have the skills to use the equipment. I have been out of the field for a number of years so my experience to deliver on performance tests is lacking. I revisited the post a number of times and confirmed it was not within my ballpark.

The application that wins this opportunity will earn the right to own the equipment. I only wish I could pitch an application that was worthy.

It is interesting to see all the different views on this topic. I am sure there are many members who could do a great road test of this instrument. It may require learning a lot, but everyone here has that capacity. It may require a large effort - for sure. It may require putting together some test instrumentation and scenarios, but this stuff doesn't need much design, just a bit (or a lot) of research. There are even some spectacular road test examples to get ideas from. So yes it may be a scary amount of work or an amount of work that has an opportunity cost that is too high or perhaps the benefit of owning this instrument is not sufficient to justify the work, but I believe anyone commenting on this topic is fully capable of doing a great road test of this instrument. I hope members aren't deterred from trying because they have somehow been convinced they cannot handle this instrument.

As for me, do I like and want the instrument? - yes of course, it is fantastic. Would I use it regularly? Yes, of course, it would even end up in a lot of blogs. Will I apply? No, like many others, I would have to expend a monumental amount of effort to do justice to this instrument, and I get vastly more satisfaction from creating than from testing. In the time I don't spend on testing this instrument I can and will be designing and building creations of my own.
