Community Guardian

Community Guardian
Helping to moderate the site of spam and abusive content.
I Just wanted to remind you of the power we have to keep our community a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

When you see any content that is abusive or needs moderation, don't hesitate to report it as 'spam/abusive'. Not only will you be helping to keep the community a great place, but you'll also earn the title of "Community Guardian" an achievement to show off your efforts when the moderation team see that you're a regular contributor to reporting content that needs acting upon.

Look for the 'more' option if you do not immediately see the text to 'report as spam/abusive' on content.

All you have to do is report any content that needs attention, like user profiles, forum posts, replies, or blog posts. The more people that report content, the better.

We're also exploring mechanisms with the development team that will help to prevent spam content before they get a chance to post on the element14 Community.

Together, we can make sure the element14 community is a valuable resource for all.

Thanks for being a part of the team!

It seems spammers join the E14 community for the sole purpose of spamming, so are new members with few points. Do the brand new members  immediately go to moderation for their first couple posts until their intentions are established?

This can seem a good idea at a glance, but all it really does is discourage new members from interacting with the site because their content would go straight into moderation "for no reason" and that can really put people off participating. Especially when the moderation staff don't work weekends and have working hours.

There are also cases where spam accounts simply post innocuous content for a period of time to look like they're not spam accounts and achieve points, and then post spam.

It's also the case that it's easy to believe spam accounts are automated bots all of the time when in actual fact there's been evidence to show that there are real people being paid to do this, to rank up the account and then post spam - so while we can tweak and alter rules as much as we want, it still needs an eye to report the content or discern between spam and not spam.

I believe the right answer is to use a combination of StopForumSpam and Akismet combined with the support of our Community Guardians and administrative staff.
