Keysight 33250A Arbitrary Waveform Generator Fix

charlieo21
charlieo21 over 3 years ago

I just want to share the score that I did with this arbitrary waveform generator that wasn't working properly.

It failed at amplitudes from 1Vpp to 10Vpp. Also, it failed the self-test, the seller told me that it just freezes when running the self-test.

I ran the self-test at night and next day it showed that failed the self-test with these two errors:

629: +20 dB amplifier path

630: Internal ADC overranged during one of the above tests

With this information, I decided to fix it, I found it quite easy to open it, a few screws and that's it.

image

It has a lot of passives in the bottom side and a lot of ICs in the top side, the power supply has its own board and apparently it wasn't design by Keysight.

I found the service manual and I started debugging it.

This table show what attenuators and/or amplifier is used in the different ranges.

image

The hybrid amplifier is used for the higher amplitude ranges. I was a little scared that the hybrid amplifier was damaged, and the AWG was done.

image

I started pocking around the inputs and output of the hybrid amplifier.

image

When I place the probe in the pin 6 (-INP) the output it showed the correct amplitude.

Basically, the pin connection wasn't making a good connection.

image

I pushed the pin just to be sure that it's doing a good connection with the hybrid.

Now it's working and it passed the self-test.

    Well done.

I love to see simple fixes work.

Fair enough, although to me it is still modern as it has an LCD :)

Hmm. I'd say heating and cooling cycle may well change the calibration in some measurable way ... I'd be a bit nervous about doing it if it wasn't entirely necessary.

Well it's not exactly modern, I think the first models were build in the late 90s. This model has been discontinued in 2016. Definitely it was nice to find that the service guide with schematics and theory of operation was available online.

I thought on putting some solder in the pins but probably it would change the impedance and distort the signals.

It's been rare to see any modern gear with schematics ... glad you were able to get them and get it back to life!

It is awesome when your confidence pays off.  Does the flaky connection need a more permanent fix?

Always nice to solve a dog fault (i.e. persistent) with a small dodo bag (i.e simple inexpensive repair).
