Our Design Challenges are Too Complicated... We should be solving the real problems..

Like designing products to solve why I'm stuck to this pleather chair in 83.8 deg F heatwaves and why we don't have a way to keep it cool.

If you're from the UK you'll know that air conditioning here really isn't a thing, and it's even harder if you're renting.

When you're working from home, this starts to get to be a challenge, a real hot one. There's only so much I can get from swamp coolers and fans blowing at me, and keeping the curtains shut.

What's worse though, is how hot the chairs are. Why on earth don't we have cooling chairs?

I mean, thermaltake have a cooling gaming chair. I'm not convinced about it though, but I'm even less convinced about this, which looks like five laptop fans stuck together in a pad:

We used to have a wild idea of design challenges where people managed to produce products that would sell... if someone can get away with selling this kind of thing on amazon, phew do we overthink things :D

But seriously... how can I cool this chair? Maybe I should have heatpipes in the base...

If you just want cool, .... Get a canvas beach chair, get it wet, put a fan under it, strip off your pants, and have seat. Of course, this assumes you are not in an open concept office....

Perhaps what is really needed .... is a heat-pump. Obligatory XKCD - this week's too: https://xkcd.com/2790/ We've had refrigerated CPUs in overclocked PCs ... (like this https://www.trustedreviews.com…

Maybe it should be approached from different angle - somewhere in the past I have read that Israeli tanks (big metal  boxes slowly roasting at the sun, with limited power budget for crew comfort) are equipped  with AC helmets - they have taken advantage from the fact that most of human's heat exchange happens through head to limit power requirements for AC. So maybe headset (tanker helmet?) with Peltier module (and big fan) attached?

I've wanted to give this a go for a long while, unfortunately, it's not available in England

They've even made 4 iterations of it.

Interesting - I wonder how long it works, it looks too small for the task - but Sony is a reputable company that wouldn't probably offer some half-cooked gadget without any real usability...

Depending on the "level" of action, between 4 and 8 hours.

so - make it USB-powered and integrate it into neck-support part of the chair and you are all set...

I mean - even the basic setup (PWM controlled turbine that is cooling the neck-contact surface [equivalent of the wet towel around the neck from the analog world], maybe with Peltier module to lower temperature) without all those fancy sensors and mobile app for control (speaks luddite part of myself)

The Sony Reon Pocket uses a Peltier module, it tries to trick your body into thinking it's cooler or warmer than it actually is. It is like a placebo effect.

The peltier will also be doing some actual cooling. How effective it is is up for debate.
