Getting up to speed

Morning

Temporarily retired Canadian here. Ive been trying to teach myself some basic electronics, mostly for a hobby but if i feel confident ill go back to the local college in the fall. Unfortunately ive been getting jammed up on the math. Numbers weren't a huge priority when i was a kid, so sadly im really far behind. Does anyone know of a reliable site to learn electronics specific math, and schematics while im at it, should probably get better at that too before i start melting too many things.

You can visit khan academy. Personally, I was benefited by their math videos when I needed to brush up some math for my projects.

Doppleganger I'm going to recommend a new discovery to me - the Analog Devices Engineering University Program . When you get into the individual labs, there is the math that is specific to that circuit…

Welcome fellow Canadian and retiree to the E14 Community. What does temporarily retired mean?

You definitely come to the right place if you are looking to dip your toe into electronics.

Although the math can be important, it doesn't need to be mastered in order to take on projects. If you were designing circuits from the ground up then the calculation need to be made. If you are just repeating a circuit already built then not so much.

Be sure an check out the forums. The Challenge and Project sections is great for ideas and can generate some rewards.

RE: ELECTRONICS ROADMAP I'm currently waiting on the book discussed in this post. It is a gem for electronic enthusiast.

I tend to use a few tools around like this on a part selling competitors website. The formulas are there. It does the heavy lifting for you.

There is also Electodoc Android app if one wants to have offline calculators (and other resources like popular pinouts or ASCII table)

Thanks everyone for the welcome. For those that asked about temporary retirement, i left my last job with the intention of taking a few years off to learn a new trade. Admittedly its going slower than i anticipated, but progress is happening.

I appreciate everyones response and im slowly getting through all you suggestions of videos, forthcoming books, web links et al.

While i have everyones attention, where do i buy parts? I do have an electronics store in town, but they seem to cater to Bell employees and their needs. Amazon is bunk, either they don't have what i need, have 3 month shipping, or an outrageous markup. Is there a goto site for bits and bobs of the electronic variety?

This site is affiliated with Newark (for US market) and Farnell (for EU market). At least in my country they have quite a cheap shipping in comparison with other distributors. They offers several over milion different parts, so good luck when searching. Local stores are good when you need something quickly in low ammount, but usualy it is much more expensive and currently I visit them very rarely, but in history they saved me several times.

Newark but competitors also exist. There is not a lot of serious players and they are easy to find.

Electronic parts suppliers is not the Radio Shack of yester years. The Health kit type part suppliers have gone by the wayside. Newark & Digi-key are two. I tend to shop aliexpress because of costs but delivery is 8-10 weeks.
