e14 Question of the Month

Fast chargers and improvements in battery technology are alleviating some of the concerns that people have with EVs; however, hybrids and ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles can still be great cars.  Take the poll and let us know what kind of car you would buy, and please tell us why in the Comments section below!

I haven't done the math. I'm just going on the assumption that since my car sits in the garage for up to 7 days not doing anything that there will be enough energy collected to drive it the couple of miles…

I historically keep a car for about an average 20 years, 150k-200k miles. I do the mundane maintenance. Since my latest purchase is only 5 years old, it will be another 15 years until I'm ready to see…

They'd have to have a lot of heavy duty lifting trucks for when the vehicles flew off round the corner!!

Interesting story about a 'runaway EV' in the news here this week

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-67005620

I've seen one of these models parked at work recently - perhaps I should keep my distance.

To be frank, this has nothing to do with the motor energy but all to do with the embedded electronics. This could have happened with an internal combustion engine, and I believe it already did in France.

All the internal combustion engine vehicles I've ever owned/driven have had the ability to place the gearbox in neutral, mechanically isolating the engine from the driven wheels. The embedded electronics have no means of placing the vehicle in gear or preventing me from taking it out of gear.

Luckily I've never had an internal combustion engine vehicle with electrically operated gearbox that would allow embedded electronics to shift into gear or prevent me from taking it out of gear.

Electrically operated gearboxes in cars has been a thing for years: I had a Jaguar XF back in 2009 with one.  In fact, I'm trying to remember if I've had an automatic which wasn't electronic and software driven but I don't think I have and that's casting my mind back to 2004.  Even on my EV now, I can put the car into neutral.  There are no "stepped gears" in it naturally, essentially it is equivalent to continuously variable, but all that is really happening is the motor is running faster or slower.  Of course, the software on any of these gearboxes could prevent a shift into neutral when underway but that's a software thing, not an EV/ICE thing.
