New and Exciting

What is the most exciting technology you discovered or rediscovered this year?
This is not a question about significant leading edge technologies, it is just about what you currently find exciting.

Are you into VR? Like Meta Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro
Are you into computers? Like Raspberry Pi 5 or Apple iMac M3
Are you into e-bikes - a massive trend
Are you into Machine Learning? Like Huskylens
Are you into RISK V or FPGAs? Like BeagleV Fire
Are you into AI? Like CHATGPT

Are you into robots and automation? Like commercial drone applications or self-driving cars

Are you into communications technology? Like SDR

Are you into gaming technology? (and games)

Re you into retro electronics? Like vinyl audio or tube amps

Are you into test instrumentation? and setting up a great lab

Are you into software/firmware? Like RTOS or real-time LINUX on microcontrollers

Or all of the above?

What turns your crank these days?

What is on your wish list?

What courses do you need to take?

At this moment I have two children studying Engineering, the oldest girl studying industrial technology engineering and the middle one studying computer engineering. I have gone back to dusting off the books from my time at the university and relearning everything that I studied and have never used in my life so as not to feel stupid every time they ask me something between bites.

I’ve not been too active but am starting up again. I am looking at the long list of half finished projects from the past and prioritizing what I want to work on. I’m trying not to start something new until I either finish or abandon and remove the clutter around me. Most of the things moving to the top of the list are projects that appeal to a wider audience - gadgets that that are useful or entertaining to people in general. This means things like RoadTests are moving down unless they directly could help a project. As to the tech involved, I’m 10 years behind the times.

    These days: learning. 2 things:

    1. I re-found the joy of looking at good analogue designs, trying to understand them, master them.
Meanwhile collect datasheets, manuals, blogs related to that. Read. Until I know what's happening.

    2. Learn to solder any* surface mount component reliably.

    *any!

Currently rediscovering Q-SYS control systems. I have just taken delivery of some of their core processors and signed off on a project that uses it at the core,  so time to figure out how to make best use of it and learn the quirks.

It uses Lua as its scripting language so I will need to get more familiar with that.

Q-SYS are now starting to bring in aspects of machine vision to their systems for better camera tracking and control automation. I guess automated theme parks are about to get more fun soon.

That doesn't sound so small. Pretty tricky to get speed from vibration if the system is well balanced.

My play list also exceeds my play time, but at least I won't run out of things to do.

The emergence of low-cost SDRs  and low-cost VNAs really opens the door for us to indulge in this field.
