AIS Transponder

I need to know how to make an Automatic Identification systems transponder that sends and receives proximity warnings from other vessels in the vicinity but does not report time and location to an open database like the one that Elon Musk could shut down only because he owned the platform, when someone was giving the location of his private Jet in realtime on twitter.

  • Must be big time if worried about Elon Musk. 

  • That might be difficult as any nearby vessel receiving your AIS transponder signal could forward the time and location data to an open database, which could then be used to report to an on-line platform.

  • I don't know how exactly one can send proximity warnings to other vessels without revealing one's position... "There is something in the range of radio transmission, but we don't know where (may be in front or at the left for example) or how far away - maybe 200 km from us? Signal is somewhat weak - but they may be nearby and have damaged antenna ..."

    EDIT: technically, there is a possibility to omit time/position data that should be transmitted in the AIS message by using "no available" values, but that would be useless and maybe illegal - radio propagation changes so what's a point of having information "I can hear something, but I don't know where and how far from my position". And about "open database" - AFAIK databases are feed by network of independent receivers listening to all the messages - the same way as plane positions are recorded, not by AIS devices themselves, and crews wanting to avoid letting their position known (for example to hide their illegal activity, like sanctions avoidance or illegal fishing) are powering off their AIS altogether

    You mean like sending your position along with multiple fake positions, such that you will hopefully be avoided but no-one knows which position is actually you ?

    That's an idea but I was thinking more spoofing your MMSI and other identification data. Name, route etc.
