e14 Question of the Month

With technology advancing at such a rapid pace, the components we're using now might not be the same five years from now. Take the poll and in the Comments section, let us what you think students should learn to best prepare themselves for when they graduate.

    A bunch of responses to this question seem to have disappeared. I had mentioned a course on teamwork, mentoring and networking. Universities could create forums where students could practice, and be monitored…

    I voted for "research skills". It will happen that somebody will ask you something that you don't know. Knowing how to research and properly evaluate information is key to successfully solve problems you…

    How to use and produce PCB design software for whatever is the most-used CNC PCB manufacturing hardware of the day. I have never used such equipment (most of it appeared after I retired) but I imagine it might only work with selected components, especially CPU's which seem to get smaller and/or have more pins every week. Other considerations will be clearances and distances as required by RF-oriented chips. It's not just about getting the electrons from A to B.

    It depends greatly in the time that we all live in. Well, today every part of the world has different ecosystem. So it would be a good idea to teach students something that will be useful once they are out of the university or schools.

    One challenging part is that we all have knowledge but how to apply it to create products or projects that can impact the world in positive manner is totally different thing.

    In general my idea is that following courses should be there in the university.

    ---> Electromagnetic field theory (This is for understanding how current flows through a material and how magnetic and electric fileds works )
    ----> Electronics basics/advance (This is to make them understand how transistors and other electrocnics works and how to get started with circuit designs)
    ----> OOP concepts(This is more of a programming concepts such as OOP so that they get ready to write some code)
    ----> Microcontrollers/processors (MCU/MPU plays important role is todays' electronics they must understand internals of these devices if they need bright career in electronics)
    ----> Digital design and electronics (This course is required as it will have give understanding of  number systems such as HEX/BIN codes and their conversions)
    ---->Analog/Digital communication (This is the required module for someone who needs to understand how communication protocols works. Some techniques such as modulation, RF antenna design, sampling, Filter design etc. )
    ----> Sensors theory and design
    ----> Then some advance course on coding.
