A while back, I was fortunate enough to win a Duratool tool kit from e14. Being a bit of a tool addict, I already had a few different kits - so I set it aside in the hopes of gifting it to someone that needed one or would appreciate the gift.
That happened this weekend. Last night, at a neighborhood “Happy Hour”, one of the couples' 9-year-old son decided to see what we were up to. We were speaking of gardens and he expressed an interest in building a planter box - but lamented that he needed tools.
I did ask his father if I could give him tools. He didn't say "no". This was on the "Hope To Do List" for a L O N G time. Dad had his chance. I hustled home immediately to fertilize this budding interest.
The young lad got to break the cellophane and rip the cardboard on the kit. He shared today that it felt like Christmas.
I also gave him some wood, nails, a hand saw and a square. I figured that he would hammer a few nails and the adventure would pass. I was thrilled to be wrong. I was only one cup of coffee into this morning when my wife pointed to the young lad hammering away in his driveway. He came over looking for a few more “scraps”. We discussed his project. I made him measure what he would need. I ran the table saw and my wife helped him hammer. Dad got involved – even though he was genuinely busy grilling for Mother's Day. In the end... it is a mighty fine planters box and the little guy is excited – about planting and building. And he built it himself.
THAT, my friends, is a good weekend in my book.
Still on the "Hope To Do List"... electronics. Maybe a crystal radio set...
The little guy's Dad did call me an "enabler". ABSOLUTELY!!!
