Engineers are on the go. Gone are the days when engineers do most of their work in the lab or on the bench. They use test equipment in the facility or at a job site, that is, out of the ordinary locations. For these settings, engineers need handheld, portable equipment to make precise, accurate measurements. Handheld oscilloscopes are the focus of this month's Question of the Month: How often do you use a Handheld Oscilloscope?

    I'm intrigued , I have a couple of CRT scopes but never use them. I haven't had issues with things I can't see on a digital scope but might on an analogue for a very long time. (Although ground loop hf noise from the digital scopes can be an issue.)

    I was tempted by a Telequipment D83 on Ebay (I used one about 50 years ago !) -

    but then I remembered that I wouldn't use it Relaxed

    So I would be interested to see a situation that I might be missing .

    (The D83 is still there at £55 but it might not work !)

    I have seen this question bouncing in my email box and finally decided to answer it 

    at work on the bench and in the van i have a basic 2ch digital scope which i use most days 

    maybe i use a CRT scope once a month when doing an alienment of some things 

    One workshop i went to they had a Rohde Schwarz scope but still could not get the wave i wanted.

    they were having trouble with alignment of laser cutter But with CRT was easy  

    My example is using a digital and CRT scope looking at CD player RF waveform.

    both will show the waveform But when you have a sad spindle motor 

    you won't see the fault on the digital scope.

    or doing alignment of Pioneer cd laser

    I'm looking for a portable scope that can trigger on I2C and RS-232 signals.  I have been looking at the Siglent SHS800X.

    I got one here from a Project 14 prize and it is nice. Used it for probing mains connected boards and for troubleshooting while up on a ladder. Much better that way than with my bench scope. But usually the bench scope is better. I think the portable scope is more of a “second scope” for someone who already has a decent bench scope.

    How would you define reasonably capable?

    The one I have, is comparable to a 100 MHz 2 channel bench scope like the Rigol 1102 for generic use and usability (including screen resolution). Except for elaborate triggering. That's more difficult on my handhold.

    I would use a handheld 'scope more often if I owned one.  I am currently evaluating the available product offerings, hoping to find a handheld that is both affordable and reasonably capable.

    I don't have a handheld oscilloscope but I believe it is very effective for everyday use.

    This may only apply to the lower end of the market, but...

    One feature of the USB scope I particularly like is the 'panoramic' width of the waveform display.

    You can display the whole capture and still be able to read the text on the protocol decoding overlay. Hit the 'print screen' and you have a copy of it stored for later.

    On the bench scope, by the time you are zoomed in enough to read the decoding, then you have to pan back and forth to see the rest of the captured waveform. The screen capture option tends to limit you to a copy of the current viewport and not of the the whole capture. So you have to pan, screen capture, pan, screen capture, pan, screen capture... then download and stitch the individual images back together.

    Some pros and cons for hand-held scopes:

    Hand-held Pros

    • Portable - can be used in mobile applications
    • Isolated - useful when you don't want the instrument grounded to mains ground
    • Small - useful in setups where there is little space for instrumentation
    • Video framing - can be used in images and videos of apparatus where you need to show the scope display without it dominating the image area

    Hand-held Cons

    • Not high performance - limited bandwidth, limited resolution, limited accuracy, limited voltage
    • Cramped, non-standard controls
    • Small cables, connectors and probes that may have limited performance and can be pretty flimsy
    • Small low-res screen - hard to see some signal features
    • Poor triggering
    • Few channels
    • Batteries die

    USB scope Pros

    • Save on the cost of a display (if you have a host computer already)
    • Can have a nice display with extensive processing capabilities

    USB scope Cons

    • Slow boot
    • Limited performance
    • Non-standard controls
    • More cables
    • Can take a lot of space to place the host computer
