Question of the Month: How often do you use a Handheld Oscilloscope?

e14 Question of the Month

Engineers are on the go. Gone are the days when engineers do most of their work in the lab or on the bench. They use test equipment in the facility or at a job site, that is, out of the ordinary locations. For these settings, engineers need handheld, portable equipment to make precise, accurate measurements. Handheld oscilloscopes are the focus of this month's Question of the Month: How often do you use a Handheld Oscilloscope?

How would you define reasonably capable? The one I have, is comparable to a 100 MHz 2 channel bench scope like the Rigol 1102 for generic use and usability (including screen resolution). Except for elaborate…

As a hobbyist, I have somewhat limited resources so between the antique CRT based unmovable Telequipment D1011 scope and the DSO Shell 150, I find myself using the latter more often that not.

I have two handheld oscilloscopes and an additional one at work.  I don't need them often, but when I do... it's the only tool and they get used for hours.

    I haven't used a hand held for years (like 20+) .

I quite often take scopes out but I usually I need a serious scope with a decent sized screen and that excludes any hand held ones I know of.

The nearest I get to a hand held is a Picoscope with a laptop PC.

As and when required. Just added a couple to the inventory this year, so will see how it goes.

I forgot about my USB oscilloscope.  I only pull that one out when I need to take a screen capture.

Thanks michaelkellett and rsjawale24 for the reminder.

For serious work I also use a bench scope. I use a handheld regularly though if I don't need difficult triggering. And for measurements that are not ground referenced.

I prefer the handheld scopes. I'm not designing mission critical stuff, and quick look on a handheld scope for troubleshooting can give a go/no go - as long as the handhelds are good for 600 VAC in.

I have a handheld scope but seldom use it because my bench scope is much better and almost always nearby when I need a scope.
