QUESTION OF THE MONTH: What is your mobile phone's operating system (OS)?

e14 Question of the Month

While there have been over the years a wide variety of mobile OSs, at the present time, there are only a few mobile OSs with a large number of users. But like anything in technology, some things fade (Blackberry, for instance) and some things shine a new light on the market. What mobile OS do element14 users use? Please vote below.

I'm Android. I do miss Windows Phone though. The tiled screen design was original. The hardware was good. It was just that nobody bothered to write any apps for it.

Mine has a Series 30+ operating system. It’s a Nokia 105 from Microsoft, released in 2015. The battery lasts for more than one month without charging. It’s even more durable than the Nokia 3310.

As an update on this, the inner folding screen stopped working. It started displaying a bright white bar at the bottom and stopped responding to touch on the left. In my opinion folding screens are not ready. It was a fun experiment, but I doubt I'll do it again. (I had a Microsoft Surface Duo for a bit too. Ok in some ways, but not perfect either.)

I took a tablet into our local UBreakiFix store and the lady in front of me had a folding phone.  The repair technician was diplomatic but had to tell her that once those phones break, you can buy a new phone for what it will cost you to repair them - and the repairs aren't guaranteed.  He said the same thing that you did, Fred27 , they are cool but not ready for prime time.

Mine is Sony Ericsson proprietry. Unfortunately Sony don't support it any more. I have been looking for a replacement for years but have not found one. I have yet to see the 'Code memo' function on any other phone, but to me it is invaluable. I believe it uses 'Hashing' instead of direct comparisons as most modern phones seem to do, which makes it virtually uncrackable. The camera takes excellent pictures for a 2 mega-pixel device; I have some that will magnify to A4 and the quality is still acceptable. The sound recorder works well even in an inside jacket pocket, I used it to good effect when I was a Mystery Shopper. The display was just about adequate at 1.8", allowing me to use it as a sat-nav with a Bluetooth key-fob device. Unfortunately the fob slowly turned to sticky black jelly, as so many chinese and cheap japanese accessories do. The battery life is measured in weeks most of the time.

If I could write my own software and install it I'd be able to write my own 'Code memo' program, but I'm told that you can't do that on modern phones.

It's not perfect; I would change the text font, size, colour, and background colour for most of the built-in apps. The size of the K750i fits in any reasonably-sized pocket and does not snap in two when negotiating styles between two fields.

On any Android you can install any application you have written. Sure, you have to activate "development mode" and allow "external sources", but it's nothing difficult. The highest "cost of entry" is learning java and the entire android ecosystem but there are very good tutorials around.

By the way, what is the "Code memo" function that you are talking about? Maybe it exists under another name.

I learned that for one of the road tests. It was a bit of a learning curve. But at day 2 I was able to modify an existing app, build it and deploy to my phone.

'Code memo' sounds like a 'password wallet' type of app. These are installed by default on most phones now, but if there are specific requirements then you may want a custom app.

It's possible to write apps for phones, although if you want to use the "native" programming language and development environment that the devices support, then an iPhone will require a Mac for developing for it; Android doesn't have such a requirement. As Jan says, there are lots of tutorials.

There are other languages and frameworks and environments out there for creating apps too, so many that it's hard to keep up (there's a new way every month it seems). It may take a few attempts until you find the one you're comfortable with for a particular task.

I am using Android 10 with XOS 6.0 but want to switch to the Apple iOS. Any suggestion? Should I switch.

Alice_Brown Each OS has its strengths and weaknesses.  The company I work for uses Apple - because it just works - on the things that it does - but it doesn't do everything.  Android seems to do everything.  Some of it is good.  Some not so good - but you have a choice because there are way more apps.  Trying a new OS to see what it's like is probably the only good reason to switch OS's for the average person.  See what you like.  I'd say go for a cheaper iPhone SE if you're just taking it for a test ride.  My 2 cents.
