What would you like the upcoming Fluke webinar on PV and Solar (Nov 13th) to focus on?

Hi everyone, I really appreciated all the feedback on my previous event-related poll discussing the Arduino Opta webinar which took place yesterday, so I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the next webinar we have coming up:

Tools and Techniques for Commissioning and Maintaining Photovoltaic Systems which is being hosted by Fluke on November 13th next month.

We have an agenda for the event:

  • What tests are conducted during the lifecycle of a solar installation.
  • Ground faults and how to use voltage to locate a ground fault in a string of solar modules.
  • Category and voltage ratings and how they apply to selecting the proper test tool.
  • A live Q&A section where you can put all your questions to our host from Fluke.

The Q&A section proved very popular yesterday so I wanted to ask you, if you're planning on attending would you like us to reserve time for a longer Q&A session at the end? (ie. 15-20 minutes) Or would you rather the session focus on the core content?

Plus, of course, let me know if there's anything you'd like the session to include or have addressed, share your thoughts and I will pass them on Slight smile Have a good Friday!

Maybe start with a quick overview of the subsystems in a typical PV system and the issues often associated with each subsystem.

I'd like to understand better the art of series and parallel PV circuits, detecting if a PV panel is failed, and behavior when a small portion of panels are in the shade.

I'm interested in the different batteries/chargers used for PV systems and how to choose the best fit for a particular application. Maybe one configuration is easier to maintain or diagnose problems??

I'm sure we can arrange something along those lines!

Squirrels. They get on the roof with remarkable ease and chew throught the cables that run between the panels (outdoors) and the control gear (mostly indoors). Manufacturers and/or the installers should be made to use metal-bodied connectors and flexible metal conduit for all outdoor wiring, and metal boxes for outdoor electric and electronic parts of the control system. Discuss.

There are no squirrels where I live, like in 90% of the areas here, so that would be an unnecessary price increase.

Wow! That doesn't sound fun having your cables eaten. I think it's an interesting point to debate (although, as obones points out, there is certainly a counter-argument to be made).

I wonder if it is something Fluke has any influence of - I think they would be more willing to discuss metering issues and the hardware that can be used to test the compliance of the installation with existing regulations (whatever those regulations could be in different countries).

BTW. This can be also interesting subject to discuss - different national regulations regarding PV systems: that could be interesting not only to the designers wanting to prepare their products for worldwide deployment but generally for the engineers: if - for example - in some very warm and humid climate high voltage connectors should be X and tested using YZ and in some very cold country connectors shouldn't be X but Q instead it would increase general awareness about durable outdoor system design...

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share a quick update on this upcoming webinar and let you know Fluke has been very receptive to all the comments here. They will be including in the session a discussion of the subsystems in a typical PV system, the art of series and parallel PV circuits, plus the issue of squirrel damage Slight smile

The session will be focusing on the core content in response to the poll but we'll still have a quick Q&A section at the end when we can bring up any other discussion areas too.

We also now have a great prize for the session being provided by Fluke. There are five thermal imagers which connect to your phone on offer in a little competition as part of the session.
