Which trait do you value the most in a co-worker?

dougw
dougw 8 months ago

I don't know how to create a poll with Verint so I will just ask a Friday question....

Which of the following great traits do you value the most in a co-worker?

  • Integrity
  • Creativity
  • Humbleness
  • Work ethic
  • Experience
  • Enthusiasm

In the comments below you could also indicate which one you or others consider your greatest trait.

I left out some traits like confidence, humor and intelligence, but you could comment on these and others as well.

    Integrity.

I think we all have a word that encompasses integrity, honor, faithfulness, trustworthiness, selflessness, duty, loyalty and all those other admirable qualities that we aspire to - and would like to see in others.  In my personal life, it's loyalty.  I would also agree that "loyalty" is not the right term for those qualities at work.

Experience coupled with the capability to work out what needs to be done and getting on and doing it without micromanagement. Humour and supportive team work to under pin it. The best teams I worked in were very flat in de-facto management, and de-jure only came into play for overall solution ownership (buck owner) and nonsense HR policies.

I believe that in Engineering, teamwork is best accomplished with a healthy mix of all of the listed traits.  Saying that, I could narrow it down to Creativity and Humbleness.  Problem solving is enhanced when members can put form their ideas (creativity), while still accepting the ideas of other members (humbleness).  This combination allows the best of all the team members to blend into the best possible approach.

Throughout my career I believe that these two traits allowed me to be both a team member and a team leader, bringing forth many successful products.

    Hey Doug,

I'd say you may be missing one: Reliability / Dependability. Though you could say that comes under work ethic.

Though really, I'd say the minimum is the tri-force of integrity, work ethic, and enthusiasm. The rest usually comes with time or being allowed to be relaxed and yourself; but who knows?

Good point. Dependability is right up there.

I like your big 3 short list. The tough bit is choosing which is the most desirable.

For me, integrity is a must have, go / no go criterion, but if that is a given then enthusiasm is probably next.

I'm not convinced that Humbleness is a great trait for a worker. It's one that may slow you down in your carreer growth.
