Which trait do you value the most in a co-worker?

I don't know how to create a poll with Verint so I will just ask a Friday question....

Which of the following great traits do you value the most in a co-worker?

  • Integrity
  • Creativity
  • Humbleness
  • Work ethic
  • Experience
  • Enthusiasm

In the comments below you could also indicate which one you or others consider your greatest trait.

I left out some traits like confidence, humor and intelligence, but you could comment on these and others as well.

Hey Doug, I'd say you may be missing one: Reliability / Dependability. Though you could say that comes under work ethic. Though really, I'd say the minimum is the tri-force of integrity, work ethic…

Not necessarily; the great thing about moral codes is that there are so many to choose from!

If it's a friend in real life, I would say sincerity. If it's a colleague, I would mention experience, humility, and humor. In the workplace, it's truly fortunate to have a colleague who is experienced and often able to help you. If they happen to be humorous as well, that's even better; you won't feel awkward asking them questions.

I’ve led a team in a crowded and noisy STM's hackathon in 2017 where we were strangers to each other and faced new challenges. I’m glad I could boost everyone’s confidence and discretion. Every team member made their secret work and contribution, using our experience, passion, and commitment, without wasting time wondering what to do because they agreed with the objective first and their assigned tasks...

As a team member, some months later in a distant work lab, I experienced envy and unjustified resentment from those likely aware of my achievements, including the leaders. That's bad. They weren’t supportive and influenced others to feel the same, making me feel like I wasn’t adding value and work on unproductive directions.

That said. While I agree with loyalty in general, I prefer to highlight what I don’t like: people who let their (any kind of malice) envy impair their judgment and obscure their best qualities we, of course, want and appreciate

Yes, being a team leader with strangers can be quite a challenge.

The main thing you have to remember is that people will be people.

I have found that most people are willing to work together if you set up a well structured environment that encourages participation in the process.

As I said in my earlier post, when you encounter cowboys, you have to either work them into a position where you can take advantage of their skills, or just cut them out of the group.

As the leader, you have to set the tone, monitor progress, and adjust the team as needed.
