Magazines?

Workshopshed

I was looking for old copies of the now closed magazine Diyode and stumbled upon Silicon Chip mag. Has anyone read that?

https://siliconchip.com.au/

I used to be a subscriber to Practical Electronics but found that the articles start to repeat after a few years.

Any recommended reading?

    (Inserts 'Smug Chip')

I use a very accurate micrometer with a pair of anvils designed for measuring paper thickness...

Nice! I have not seen any live music event for ages. And every time I check what's happening, I'm always too late. Need to fix that this year, it's my resolution.

I'm fed up of all general electronics magazines because they almost all gave up making an effort : (

Niche-oriented electronics/computing magazines exist but are (1) pricey, (2) require a subscription or (3) publish infrequently, or a combination!

For IEEE journals, (1) and (2) applies.

There are some quite good ham radio magazines, the UK RSGB magazine suffers from issue (2).

MIT Press has some great niche computing/electronics with music/arts, but (2) and (3) apply.

Occasionally an Elektor USB stick is lowered in price, that's not bad for a sort of occasional reference, but the spirit of a magazine to pick up and read is lost with that.

The tech magazine I miss the most is Dr. Dobbs by far. I used to read every page plus the ads, and then couldn't wait for the next one to arrive. I only understood a fraction at the time, but I think it helped me a lot.

Even the vaguely tech magazines like "Wired" (which I would never buy regularly or ever want a subscription to either) are a husk. It measures 3 mm thick! (accurately measured with calipers, I'm not exaggerating..). You're paying £3 per millimeter.

Workshopshed Nope looked at it on did not want it. AND way to pricey for me! My favorite mag and I had them all, was BYTE!    I also loved EDN but sadly they went online and no paper. I also liked Popular Electronics.. I remember when the Z80 came in I was working in Interdata at the time, working with bigger boxes, and knowing the AM2901 I said the Z80 needed 16 bits so I built one, with 16 register sets. It was all wire-wrapped!

popular electronics was dope back in the day.
Nuts and Volts is pretty good.
The linux Journal used to be cool.
I wrote to the 2600 hacker quarterly one time and now they send me the magazines, and I dont think they even published my article.  The 2600 is a little too simple, but the comment section makes it pretty good.

Silicon Chip (SC) was our local here in Australia. In their prime, they were battling against Electronics Australia (EA). There was also Electronics Today International (ETI) but they finished publishing before I got into the hobby.

At my peek I was reading close to sixty technical magazines/month.

Now I only read the RPi Magazine.

Just too busy writing my books to read much these days.
