Top Tech Voices Podcast — Episode 5: EVs, The Race To Electrify & Power Management

JoRatcliffe
JoRatcliffe 6 months ago

It's time for Episode Five of the Top Tech Voices podcast! Last time we looked at AI and the latest topic is also very timely - Electric Vehicles (EVs), the race to electrify and power management.

On the show is Prof Colin Herron who has 45 years of automotive industry experience - including 17 years with Nissan in engineering. Watch below as he shares his insights and experiences including a chance meeting in a Newcastle pub, his children thinking he might be a spy and why a battery is like a can of beans...

What do you think of today's episode? How interested are you in buying an electric car, and is there a particular feature, capability or distance they can travel on one charge which would convince you to take the plunge? Or, if you already have an electric car, what is your favorite thing about it?

I think it will be a while before an EV is in my price range but funnily enough one of the most attractive features I've seen is remote climate control and de-fogging. The car could start warming itself up at a pre-set time ahead of me driving to the office in the morning.

The final podcast episode will be releasing on Monday 17th March when we will be looking at technology of the future with William Higham who consults with the likes of Amazon, Disney, HSBC and Vodafone to help them navigate the next few years.

These are some of the EV and power management-related products we recommend checking out on our online store based on today's episode:

    Another interesting episode.

I think I was more excited with electric cars back in the 90's. The AC Propulsion tZero project looked like it was about to reignite the kit car market of the 80's.

Some of the more modern lightweight concept car stuff looks interesting but not much appears to be making it to market.

It wouldn't have been all that difficult to do that with an ICE car, just plug it in overnight in the winter months, however not a feature that I ever saw adopted in the UK.

That wiki page makes for interesting reading!

British Columbia has allowed LSVs on its roads, but this exception to the federal law was designed mainly for large, slow-moving farm equipment. Although the ZENN was technically legal in British Columbia, the cars would have needed to be equipped with warning signs and yellow flashing lights to distinguish themselves as slow-moving

That all felt more politically motivated than safety. The LSVs were allowed to go up to 60km/hr, which is more than enough for most commutes. But then they changed the rules to only allow them to go up to 40km/hr which made them impractical. IIRC, they were just over $10,000 and super economical to run, which would have helped so many low-income people, but would have taken a good chunk out of the regular vehicle market.
