My ESP plane

Fg_
Fg_ 4 months ago

Hi Element14 community,

I'm currently working on an innovative RC plane project using the ESP32 DevKit V1 as the flight controller. The goal is to create a competition-ready aircraft capable of real-time GPS telemetry using NRF24L01+PA+LNA modules for long-range communication. The system also includes a ground station based on Arduino Uno, which will receive the data and display or forward it to a mobile device.

Project Overview:

NEO-6M GPS module on the plane collects real-time GPS data.

Data is transmitted via NRF24L01+PA+LNA to the Arduino Uno ground station.

Optionally, the data is forwarded to a mobile phone via Bluetooth or USB.

Components Needed:

ESP32 DevKit V1 – 1x

Arduino Uno – 1x

NEO-6M GPS Module – 1x

NRF24L01+PA+LNA (with antenna) – 2x

NRF24L01 Adapter Boards – 2x

18650 or LiPo Battery + Voltage Regulator – 1x

Jumper wires and connectors

(Optional) HC-05 or BLE Module – 1x

I Would Like to Ask:

1. Can you help verify the feasibility of this system for reliable long-range GPS telemetry?

2. Are there any project references or documentation on Element14 that can guide me?

3. Most importantly, would Element14 be able to help provide or sponsor these components for my project?

This is a competition-oriented build, and I’m aiming for first place with a creative and technically sound solution. Any support, advice, or guidance from the Element14 team would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time and help!

Best regards,
Jeevan

Fg_ , you are on the community website of element14. To ask about stock and sales, you 'd have to go to the online store in your region. There's a Store link in the header.

Sounds really neat. Unfortunately not my area of expertise. I have some friends who would be able to give you plans, but they are not part of the E14 community Disappointed

I’m currently building an advanced educational flying model that integrates GPS navigation, long-range wireless communication, object detection, and vision-based mapping using open-source hardware. This is a personal innovation project aimed at learning and pushing the boundaries of low-cost autonomous systems.

I would like to kindly request if Element14 could send all the required components for this project free of cost as support. The project involves:

    1 × ESP32 DevKit V1 (flight controller)

2 × ESP32-CAM modules (for downward mapping and front obstacle avoidance)

    1 × NEO-6M GPS module

    2 × NRF24L01+PA+LNA modules (long-range communication)

    AMS1117 3.3V regulator module

    2 × SG90 servo motors

    2 × A2212 1000KV brushless motor

    1 × 30A ESC

    1 × 3S 11.1V 2200mAh LiPo battery

    2 × 1045 Propeller

    1 × Arduino Uno R3 (remote control)

    1 × Thumb joystick module

All necessary cables, connectors (JST, DF13), and anti-vibration mounts

Your support in providing these components would mean a lot to me and would enable this project to succeed. I’m happy to share full documentation, photos, videos, and progress updates with the community as it evolves.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

    Warm regards,

    [Fg_]

Thanks... this is exactly what I was referring to... so I guess I was correct in my terminology first time around.

Design challenges are a great way to get some free stuff in exchange for a few dozen hours of work.

You're right to question that — it’s a fair point. Just to be clear, I didn’t use any AI to write this; these are my own words. I understand how it might look from the outside, especially without a completed project to show for past requests.

The truth is, the previous project didn’t reach completion due to [brief, honest reason — e.g., limited resources, unexpected technical issues, or needing more time to build certain skills]. I’ve learned a lot since then and have been working on smaller parts to build up my abilities and stay on track.

I’m not just looking for free stuff — I’d be happy to earn support through something like a design challenge, where I can put in the hours and show real progress. I appreciate the feedback and the chance to do things better this time around.

I believe you are reinventing the wheel here, but here would be my suggestions: dont worry about a competition ready plane.

Just build or get one that can carry your estimated payload.  I'd recommend an electric powered airplane or drone that you can share its battery power with.  example: https://www.flitetest.com/

Buck power supplies and such can be purchased in lightweight footprints.

    https://www.getfpv.com/electronics/flight-controllers.html?srsltid=AfmBOor97RaH_RkVt1m6OnO55qC5gO5rOqW7rA6cfTdvMlkMP14MGN9U

and remember, you will need manual controls on the plane unless you are taking on autonomous AI flight as well.

Here is one place brushless speed controllers, motors, propellers, RC transmitters and receivers, etc. can be bought for example:

    https://hobbyking.com/

Maybe an alternative is to first build/develop your flight controller & GPS data collection on a non flying platform. Flying often ends in destruction.

How about a model boat or a model truck ?
