AI strikes again

Even the mighty are susceptible:

https://ez.analog.com/webinar/c/e/914

image

The web page describes this as a picture of an engineer working on an engine.

He looks a bit like the little brother of the AI engineers in a previous thread and he's certainly going to be in trouble when Health and Safety find him with a cut open turbine on his desk.

Can't Analog find a real engineer to pose for a picture ?

I chuckle at a webinar that's supposed to address "high power servo motor applications" and "three-phase motor systems" but the graphic display a turbine engine.

I'm currently reading Simulacra and Simulation which kind of describes the concept that people get told what something is (even when reality is completely different) to the point that they believe the simulation more.. and the simulation may have zero basis in fact. There are more serious examples of course, e.g. no-one believes there's a war between nations until the TVs state there is a war.. and in fact the reality could be a one-sided takeover which might be better described with other words.

It looks more like an image for describing virtual reality than anything to do with the webinar.. e.g. where the immersive environment could bring up service manual diagrams overlaid etc., or for training people. I saw a crude demo of that but it was pretty primitive, I doubt it has improved much. It was more like a game where you had to perform what a layman might think is heart surgery but I accidentally killed the virtual patient within seconds..

Anyhow, no matter what picture we see or what media we watch/read/listen to, it's only when we have a real product, or even a shell of a product, in our hands do we fully comprehend. I've seen it far too many times before. Give decision makers a physical replica of something you're developing and immediately they're delighted and jump to the conclusion that the product is 99% complete, forgetting that the "brains" or software required to make it functional requires considerable more effort.

So, maybe the immersive digital experience does help but having never tried it, I remain a skeptic. Nevertheless, I did see a 3d hologram of our internal organs once at an exhibition (it was just floating in the air, but very real), and that was truly impressive.

Before I went back to uni (after my SB), I briefly did marketing demos on the side of an engineering job (porting unix to new hardware systems). So think of it as the 20% happy path only, and not the hard work of figuring out how to handle all the various unhappy paths. The idea was to sell customers by way of understanding the CONOPS (concept of operations) and they would invest in the further work needed. The practice was they thought it was ready to order and got upset that it wasn't.

We keep relearning the lesson of Eliza (the groundbreaking AI program): a shallow system, convincingly presented will make the user believe there is 100x more under the hood than reality.

They hire graphic designers to design their web pages.  Graphic designers have no ideas about real engineering.

Other big corp's web page showed a girl wearing wavy long hair working in a work shop!  Laughing
