Should Analog be added to the Technologies

dang74
dang74 4 months ago

I am in the process of writing a blog on a vacuum tube project.  I noticed that it doesn't fit into any of the existing Technologies groups.  I originally brought this up in the feed-back forum.  Doug replied by suggesting that Analog should be added to the technology groups.  This could cover designs and blogs that take a more traditional approach... and don't otherwise fit into the other existing groups.

As I read through this forum, I can't help but think of this cartoon. There is no perfect solution - but we want one anyway!

Another approach might be to have some sort of a general/other/miscellaneous group which such blogs go into until there are enough of them to justify creating a new specific group.

I hadn't really registered that there isn't an Electronics section.

I think that would be  a good idea - but a the soldering iron requirement is a bit tight  - it would rule out the guy with the LM35 on breadboard.

I agree that wider scope is better !

It sounds like you want to add a group for Valves which is technoligy from a by gone aera

where as analog is just the way the technology is used

the first time i saw a cd player with 2 valves I laughed

these days only see valves with guitar amps or with amatur radio gear

I was impressed reading about a valve computer they made during the 2nd world war

that started a new catch phrase    "Mean Time Between Failures"

they should use that term for LED light fittings

    I never worry about categories.

I am very eclectic and like all things in technology.

Since I began my electronics career with tubes, I always like to see this technology exploited.

I think analog when I think vacuum tube.

After reading through the many comments here the general consensus seems to be having a more general category for things that don't otherwise fit into the existing categories.  Possible names could be: Electronics, Electronics - Other, Everything Else, Other, Outside the Box, Miscellaneous, Uncategorized...

My topic-of-last-resort is "Open Source Hardware", I shove blogs in there if I cannot find a topic that better matches the blog.

Probably most blogs have some element of open sourceness if circuitry is being shared, so it seemed a not-unreasonable dumping ground. Maybe if a general "Electronics" topic is created, then Open Source Hardware could be absorbed into it, just to keep the topics list short (i.e. maybe just rename "Open Source Hardware" if no-one is too attached to keeping the name like that, since the title "Open Source Hardware" doesn't fully describe what level of open sourceness there is inside the blogs anyway.

Often analog circuitry might be related to sensors or power, or measurement/test and thankfully there are topics for that.

I inherited managing a work website once, and misc was a mess, people could have found better categories but they didn't use them : ( And other teams were forever complaining they couldn't find what they wanted on our site, or unearthed ancient content that was wrong. I took the nuclear approach in the end, and wiped out everything that had not been accessed in ages, if it were in Misc, and then managed the movement of the remainder Misc content into better categories.

Thanks Shabaz.  I was contemplating either "Open Source Hardware" or "Power and Energy."  The latter being justified somewhat by the fact that the project contains 3 transformers... but I wasn't planning on doing a deep dive into transformer physics... but maybe I can shoe horn a little into it.
