Should Analog be added to the Technologies

dang74
dang74 23 days ago

I am in the process of writing a blog on a vacuum tube project.  I noticed that it doesn't fit into any of the existing Technologies groups.  I originally brought this up in the feed-back forum.  Doug replied by suggesting that Analog should be added to the technology groups.  This could cover designs and blogs that take a more traditional approach... and don't otherwise fit into the other existing groups.

As I read through this forum, I can't help but think of this cartoon. There is no perfect solution - but we want one anyway!

Another approach might be to have some sort of a general/other/miscellaneous group which such blogs go into until there are enough of them to justify creating a new specific group.

I still put my blogs in the personal blog area - the Technologies never seem to be a good fit.

I think Analogue would be a good addition (not Analog because that's what Analog Devices call themselves !).

I would have posted to my personal blog space if I had one.

Analog group would be nice, but I don't think of vacuum tubes as analog really. Sort of legacy electronics. I still remember going to the hardware store with my dad to buy new vacuum tubes when the TV went out. Plus had to learn about them in technical school way back in 1993. Don't see to many old electronic devices still in use with them.

I did before the move to the latest forum. I'm ok that personal blogs are downplayed on the new forum though.

For the analogue discussion: maybe we get an Electronics area? No more separation between analogue, digital, (switch mode) power.
If it calls for a soldering iron, it goes into electronics?

side story: I'm involved with a community called Audiokarma. Separating areas is a discussion every day there. But they rarely survive the test of longevity. Because once you have your own area, you tend to talk to yourself.

Cumps 2nd law of social forums:
     (
Once you split, you reduce the crowd. Or you create an echo pit.
    )

It may make sense for suppliers to split as much as possible. But for the electronic engineers part of the community, splitting doesn't help. Unless you only want responses from feel-alikes.

We've seen in the FPGA area, where there's s an AVNET board area and other areas. AVNET customers may be better off. But for the e14 community, it hasn't helped.

I like the split.  It helps me categorize what I am looking for.
But then... do we separate analog from audio?  I do think tubes (valves) are analog, but they are also used in audio.

Then there is the question of "legacy electronics".  Anyone remember Particle's Xenon?  It lasted 2 years.  That's not very long to achieve "legacy" status.

I also agree that too much categorization dilutes participation.  How much is enough but not too much?  I am conflicted.

Have to respect that 2nd law.  I can see how greater divisions result in less traffic.  Might be less of a problem on e14 where new posts rise to the top and get their moment in the sun.

I have a similar memory to yours also dating from the early 1990s.  When I was a kid I came across a film projector at my grandparents' house.  It wasn't working... my dad encouraged me to pull out a tube that was inside and go to Radio Shack to see if they had a replacement.  Our local Radio Shack had only one tube.  It wasn't a match but they gave it to me for free.  So I guess I have the honor of taking the last tube at that particular store.

Hey, once you start the schism, I leave it to you to define the schisms :)

Who will start to move inter-electronic topics to the right group?
Will we become a "not to be posted here" community (like the JavaRanch)?
Will we need moderators to correct wrong peoples?

Would you join and stay in a community where you posted an analogue question (related to an Arduino) in the Arduino forum? Would you return if the first reply was that you used the wrong forum?

I think the human mind likes to make order out of an otherwise chaotic world... so some level of categories is good.
