What little gem have you learned from one of your projects?

dougw
dougw 24 days ago

I've been thinking - I have learned so much from content found on this forum and participating on the forum has resulted in so many new ideas, whether it is branching off others' ideas or synthesizing new ideas during projects or trying to answer member questions. It suddenly dawned on me just how much this forum has contributed directly or indirectly to my knowledge and my ideas.

These questions are just to highlight this aspect of the forum, in case you are like me and haven't stepped back to think about it.

  1. Do you learn more from reading about other people's projects?
  2. Do you find this forum sparks project ideas that you want to pursue?
  3. How does it rank versus other sources of ideas?
  4. Have you found that comments on this forum help refine your ideas?

By the way, thank you to all you great contributors to my knowledge and ideas - these things are important to me.

    1. Seeing other projects gives me ideas and motivation to try new approaches, software or hardware.

    2. Projects in this forum are awesome, definitely generates ideas that stretch my capabilities.

    3. Weirdly engineerly and nerdily enough, I'll watch movies and focus more attention on props and effects than the hotties. Some projects are improved working implementations inspired by geeky movie props.

    4. If I get really stuck on an issue, this forum is one fantastic place to get advice. Honest and constructive feedback is provided as well. Its also nice the members can have a friendly lighthearted comments on projects keeping advice enjoyable as well as informative.

    1. Yes.  I learn from other people's projects.  What to do.  What not to do.  What is way beyond my skill set.

    2.  Yes.  This forum sparks project ideas - or "stretch goals".  The nicest part is that I know where there might be a SME to ask questions of if I give the project a spin.

    3.  What?  There are other sources of ideas?!          I do prefer e14.

    4.  Absolutely.  This Community provides great support - without the caustic and snide remarks of some other forums.  The people here are helpful and encouraging.  We appreciate cool applications and creativity in addition to amazing programming, PCBs, designs, and all the high level electronics stuff that is almost beyond comprehension (for me).  This is part of what makes the post project comments "great input" instead of "criticism" - no malicious intent.

    Hi Douglas,

I learn a lot of things from the projects posted on element14, especially yours.

Though I lack the ability to work on my own projects, I see some very valuable information in the projects.

I do indeed learn from other people's posts.  About a month ago there was a post dealing with a voltage translation circuit using a discrete MOSFET.  I took the time to look through the app note the poster referenced and that's when I learned that most MOSFETs have a body diode.  Like anything, the more you put in, in terms of effort, the more you get out.

Do you learn more from reading about other people's projects?

I am constantly learning from reading about other people's projects and/or blogs.  There have been many times during reading this content, that I have found myself drifting off a bit and thinking "How can I use this technique/process/concept?".  The creativity on this site is off the chart, from the top to the bottom of the membership.

Do you find this forum sparks project ideas that you want to pursue?

    Constantly!

How does it rank versus other sources of ideas?

I find that I learn better by following along with another person's experience as opposed to reading a textbook.  For me, reading blogs is more like listening to another person's thoughts or like listening to a lecture. This has always been my sweet spot of a learning experience (I have always suspected that I might a slight Dyslexia thing going on).

Have you found that comments on this forum help refine your ideas?

Definitely! Getting feedback from others has often helped be to see my problems or solutions in a new light.  The comments are sort of like brainstorming, which has mostly been a positive experience throughout my career.

And thank you for all the thought-provoking materials/projects/blogs that you have created and shared here.
