No Budget for Dev Boards – Is Volunteering at a Repair Shop a Good Way to Start?

Hey all,

I’m a Computer Engineering student, newly focused on cybersecurity and embedded systems. I don’t currently have the budget for gear like Raspberry Pi or dev kits, so I’m planning to look for a position at a local phone/laptop repair shop — even volunteering for free at first — just to get some hands-on experience.

Would this kind of work help me build skills relevant to electronics or embedded systems later on?

And if so, what should I try to focus on while I’m there to get the most learning value out of it?

Appreciate any guidance — I’m trying to take the long road, the right way.

dorukan Absolutely. The basics of troubleshooting are essentially the same no matter what you are fixing. With embedded systems, integration is a key skill. The more you know about how things are put together…

If you take the position, discover who the senior technician is and see if he will help you on your journey. For myself, I find my willingness factor to invest in the individual depends on the individual…

Don't forget about recycling if you don't want to keep some components.

I have a friend that is a network technician (not sure of his exact title), point is, his company has a lot of computers, scanners, printers etc. that eventually break down.  If not cost effective to repair, he will ask if he can have it.  Some of it he shares with me.  A lot of it is not reusable, but I find it educational to disassemble it.  I even get some interesting components to play with.  I find the various AI's useful for identifying some components. There is an electronics recycling center near me that will take most things without a fee, they publish a list, so I take the stuff I can't play with to them to dispose of.
