    I’ve been obsessing over a concept for my startup for a while. Any true attempt would instantly be bottlenecked by R&D costs, but with infinite cash, I’d build something like the "Neural-Link Workforce."

    Think: A cyber-physical bridge between untapped human potential and industrial robotics.

    We have millions of people with physical disabilities who are mentally sharp but locked out of the physical workforce. Then there’s mass layoffs and economic disruption thanks to that misnomer, AI. Has anyone here ever wanted to build a high-fidelity, non-intrusive BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) through a VR headset medium and a line of workforce robots that humans can plug into and earn from?

    Just me then?

    The main idea would be, the user wears a headset and "jacks in" to a remote field robot (humanoid or specialised chassis). The bot would be running something heavy like an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin to handle the "reptilian brain" tasks locally. This manages the inverse kinematics, dynamic balancing, and SLAM, so the latency doesn't kill the experience. The human pilot would provide the high-level intent, strategy, and problem-solving. It’s basically monetising telepathy.

    If the budget is truly unlimited, then we’re not talking about some Circuit Mess build. You’d be looking at a custom HMD integrating a high-density active dry-electrode EEG array. MAt be daisy-chaining TI ADS1299s for 64+ channels of resolution. Pair with fNIRS sensors to correlate hemodynamic response with electrical intent. We’d likely need an onboard FPGA (something like a Xilinx Kintex) just to handle the real-time artefact removal (filtering out eye blinks and jaw clenching) before the signal even hits the stream. All that good stuff.

    I’ve crunched the napkin math on this. With an unlimited budget to kickstart the hardware, you could squeeze a sustainable model out of this in the near future:

    1. The Pilot (User): It’s a Hardware ISA (Income Share Agreement). We don’t sell the expensive headset upfront. We place it for a deposit (or free), and the pilot trains in our VR "Academy." Once they get certified and land a remote contract piloting a bot, a % of their paycheck goes back to paying off the hardware. It effectively removes the barrier to entry.

    2. The Employer: They can buy the field bots outright, or they subscribe to RaaS (Robots as a Service). They get the hardware and the maintenance; we’d supply the training and talent network via the Academy.

    You could validate this by activating millions of previously unemployed individuals with a disability, but it could extend to the rest of the economy aa the tech evolves. Something like this banks on a hybrid solution to hedge against disruption. Instead of AI and robotics displacing humans, this concept makes the robot the medium of employment but keeps even the most disadvantaged empowered throughout the race. It could theoretically stabilise the workforce throughout any adoption phase by keeping humans in the loop. Machines do the heavy lifting, we do the thinking + oversight, and the economy keeps moving.

    I like your dream.  However, the cynic in me thinks we are entering a world that is the counterpoint to the one you propose... that is, one where AI is doing all the thinking and humans act as the meat robots.  I say this because the AI cost is cheaper than the robotic cost... but I would love to see a world like the one you paint.

    I appreciate the comment and pretty much agree. It’s extremely utopian. And then, so is the condition of an “unlimited budget”, which in that hypothetical scenario could help mitigate against or build into the otherwise prevailing currents that challenge the idea. Perhaps part of that infinite budget would go towards lobbying government to facilitate regulations and market conditions that might ensure human longevity via systems like this.

    With that said, there are a few positive forces that support the model longer term, that is IF we could finesse the conditions and/or secure funding. To me the "Human Brain + Robot Body" concept wins out if you consider:

    1. Liability: No one can really sue a neural net if it drills into a gas main. Insurance companies will demand a HitL for high-consequence tasks long after the tech is ready. The accountability API is provided here, and that standard will die hard. Economics as usual is the better devil we all know.

    2. Moravec’s Flip: Robot hardware costs (actuators/chassis) are plummeting faster than General Purpose Robotics reliability is rising. With the right architecture, it is currently cheaper to build a competent robot body than it is to build a robot brain that understands nuance or which posseses a reliable ‘world model’. Scaling laws are also a big question for current architecture. 

    3. Labour Arbitrage: The "meat robot" model will always fight for a shrinking pool of able-bodied workers. The hybrid model here wouldn’t try to unseat the likes of Amazon. It would be more like unlocking a net-new labout supply that no one else is optimising for. If taxation is also distributed/extended to the robots (again hinging on external conditions), you could see the human-robot symbiosis drive higher ROI for businesses. Meanwhile people could keep more of the money they earn. To me this is more sustainable than UBI.

    Otherwise, hypotheticals and utopias aside, you’re largely correct that there are challenges. Reality bites. Though I guess it could just take the right mindset (and inordinate funds) to explore this seriously and deliver the solutions despite current odds. Thanks again for your thoughts.

    Thank you for your response.  After a quick dive on Moravec's Paradox I think what you say in point 2 has real teeth.  Ironically it also supports my general belief in the meat robot... but on a more positive note it also posits that a human brain is much better at controlling a robot than an AI brain.

    Thank you for your response.  After a quick dive on Moravec's Paradox I think what you say in point 2 has real teeth.  Ironically it also supports my general belief in the meat robot... but on a more positive note it also posits that a human brain is much better at controlling a robot than an AI brain.
