Hello Everyone! 

Firstly, I would love to wish you all a Happy New Year! 

We’re back with another AskE14 question, and this one’s all about your tool stash! We all have that one tool tucked away in a drawer, gathering dust because we never seem to use it, or maybe you bought it for a project that never happened, or it just wasn’t as useful as you thought.

Here's the question: 

What’s one tool you own but never use, and why?

Is it something you regret buying? Something that looked cooler than it turned out to be? Or maybe something you think you should use more often, but never do?

    Nope, but I am thinking about recycling a wooden pallet into some sort of sprung acoustic board project for my step dance practise, before I wear a hole in the kitchen floor...

  • A cheap tool, in fact every cheap tool. I never use it because it does not do it's function well or at all. 

    Bought a set of 'precision' screwdrivers at the dollar store once. I never ever use the flat head drivers because their flat head is so thick that they don't fit in most slotted screws. Disappointed

    I tend to collect unused screws / nails that have been dropped by trades people on my lunchtime walks to prevent injury to guide dogs/wheelchair tyres. The OCD problem is finding ones that match, when you want to reuse them...

    That reminds me, I have some pipe bending springs stashed away since 2001, along with a blowtorch ready for that impending plumbing emergency. The bending springs haven't been used yet but the blowtorch was used in Dec 2015 to warm up some tinned soup during a prolonged power outage. I now have a camping stove stashed away for that next prolonged power outage...

  • I bought a small wire MIG welder and small tank of gas about 9 years ago and have never used it.

    Valuable tool to keep the center conductor equal distance for the outer conductor maintaining impedance of the cable.

    My compulsion is loose screws. I can't throw them away. I drop them into my tool kit bag and hope I can find a use for them. When I'm force to clean the bag I agonize over which ones to discard. I've passed many a boring meeting with a dry wall toggle bolt and wing nut. How close can you spin the wing it to the end without it coming off. Who needs those fidgets toys.

    BD your such a recycler. I suspect you have made an ugly stick with bottle caps and discarded metal cans.

    POTS! You got it. I wasn't a pole climbers but did work closely with them when computer networks were in their infancy. The toner (transmitter/receiver) I have used to find my way home. In the phone system hot wires were not a concern. I have used it to cable locate but not lately.

  • Back in the 1970s I built high performance test interfaces using 50 ohm copper semi rigid cables.  I used this tubing bender to shape thousands of cables, but I haven't used it in the current millennium.  It is still in my toolbox of small hand tools.  I think I still have some semi rigid pipe stashed somewhere - maybe I'll get inspired to build some RF interfaces.  The tool has two sides, one for 0.141 and one for 0.086 pipe.
