Hello Everyone! 

Firstly, I would love to wish you all a Happy New Year! 

We’re back with another AskE14 question, and this one’s all about your tool stash! We all have that one tool tucked away in a drawer, gathering dust because we never seem to use it, or maybe you bought it for a project that never happened, or it just wasn’t as useful as you thought.

Here's the question: 

What’s one tool you own but never use, and why?

Is it something you regret buying? Something that looked cooler than it turned out to be? Or maybe something you think you should use more often, but never do?

    POTS.  Plain Old Telephone System.  Landlines.  I know... no one understands what I'm saying. Laughing  I don't know who could still use them.  Sorry.

  • I am a compulsive tool buyer.  It must run in the family, as my grandfather had more than a hundred screwdrivers in his toolbox when he passed away (I have several of those in my collection now).  For me, the must have objects are screwdriver bit sets, of which I have 20+ different sets (both 1/4 and 3/16 (4mm?), plus a few handles/bits that are random sizes).  I have standard bits, hex bits, torx bits, square bits, nut drivers, security bits and on and on.  I have unopen and unused sets stuffed in toolboxes and drawers in my shop.  Even with all of these bits and drivers, no stop at a hardware store is complete unless I have spent a few (or more) minutes looking at nut drivers.  Not only to I buy these for myself, but others have also gifted me with these for various occasions.

    I have thought this was something that I could work on in counselling/therapy, but my therapist was I tool guy and he didn't think I had any issues with tool hording, or that I had other, bigger issues to focus on.

    I had to go to the garage to find the box of these tools. Every spring cleaning of the garage I'm asked to throw out these tools out since they never get used.  They were valuable in one of my careers 20 years ago.

    Anyone recognize the collection? What industry would value them?

    I'm willing to part with the Butt Set if you are willing to cover the shipping.

  • I bought an 18 inch channel lock wrench with jaws that open up to 4 inches for those tough big jobs. Specially it was to open up screw on pvc pipe caps.....until I discovered the screw on pipe caps were glued :-)

    Yes!  I forgot about that one.  That one works if I buy the filters with the grippy stuff on the bottom. Thumbsup

    I found that the plain metal band ones worked best but you need a set of them to make sure you have the appropriate diameter for the filter you are removing. 

  • Laughing  ONE tool?  I wish it were only one.  In electronics: Soldering iron tweezers, vacuum desoldering station, large Helping Hands.  I also own three angle grinders, two hand planers, two belt sanders, two sawzalls and a cable winch that has never been out of the box.  Hmmm... RF field strength meter, magnetic field strength meter, Digistump Oaks, Particle Xenons, an offset attenuator...   I'm beginning to think I might have a problem...
