What’s one tool you own but never use? We are asking e14 in our Join, Share & Win Competition

Hello Everyone!

Firstly, I would love to wish you all a Happy New Year!

We’re back with another AskE14 question, and this one’s all about your tool stash! We all have that one tool tucked away in a drawer, gathering dust because we never seem to use it, or maybe you bought it for a project that never happened, or it just wasn’t as useful as you thought.

Here's the question:

What’s one tool you own but never use, and why?

Is it something you regret buying? Something that looked cooler than it turned out to be? Or maybe something you think you should use more often, but never do?

I don't know if this counts, but I purchased a small ultrasonic cleaner thinking I would use it to clean up some really ugly parts. I kept putting off using it for a couple of years. When I finally found…

I am a compulsive tool buyer. It must run in the family, as my grandfather had more than a hundred screwdrivers in his toolbox when he passed away (I have several of those in my collection now). For me…

I have two Mitutoyo digital callipers, one 150mm, 25 years old and easily my most used mechanical tool. No issues with battery life. I also have a 300mm which is much less used.

The most recent Knipex one I got appears to use the outside diameter of the insulation as the cut depth reference. So relies on the ratio of conductor diameter to insulation diameter being consistent. If the insulation is thinner, then the blade will cut into the conductor and if it is thicker, then the blade will stop short. (If the conductor is off-centre in the insulation, then it will do both.)

Some harder insulation materials the blade can't cope with and it just scrapes the outer layer of insulation rather than cutting through it.

On cables that have a consistent conductor to insulation ratio, it appears to work very well and speeds up the workflow. Luckily, the 2.5mm² and 4mm² loudspeaker cable I bought it for stripping, it worked very well with.

Unfortunately there is no manual adjustment to increase or decrease the cut depth on specific cables.

That battery life issue was one of the big reasons why I made a power connector:

As michaelkellett points out my Mitutoyo has outstanding battery life, but it also cost a lot more than the instruments I  made the connector for..

Mine has a solid metal display housing with no opening to access the data connection, even though the 'manual' refers to serial data.

That's one reason I opted for one that uses CR2032. Luckily for me, I use one every 9 months or so, which isn't too bad.
