A new month means a new AskE14!

Engineers, makers, and problem‑solvers are always finding smarter ways to work. From optimising workflows to automating repetitive tasks, small habits can add up to serious time savings.

This month, AskE14 is all about sharing the habits that help you work more efficiently, whether you’re designing, prototyping, debugging, documenting, or managing projects.

Time for the question:

What’s the most time-saving habit you’ve picked up?

Time is a valuable resource in engineering. A simple habit — like better version control, smarter test setups, or clearer documentation. This can save hours down the line.

For hobby projects I've been pasting code into ChatGPT so that it can fulfill the role of a peer review. It has caught many dumb mistakes that would have otherwise gone unnoticed until the debug stage…

The habit that has been most valuable to me is to document my work as I do it, rather than later. This includes: Maintaining a simple project log (even in a notebook or text file). Recording why…

Simulate critical parts of the design. If the simulation works, chances are that you saved one iteration of design and the likelihood of the 1st prototype working increased by a lot. If the simulation…

Keeping tbe workshop, parts, and tools organized.

There was a previous E14 discussion post on this topic. I continue to refine the workshop and workbench areas,  in fact, I have just ordered an "Pack Over Door Organizer with 5 Large Pockets 10 Mesh Side Pockets, 44 lbs Weight Capacity Hanging Storage Organizer with Clear Window Kids Toys, Shoes, Diapers, Dark Grey, 5 Layers" People often use these for baby supplies or bathroom supplies.

Im going to use this organizer to put DVMs, handheld scopes, usb scopes, bags of sorted usb cables,  crimpers and strippers,  markers, pencils and pens - stuff that gets buried on my workbench , that needs to be quickly accessed and kept nearby. Im also running out of floor space for shelves and drawers.

I waste too much time looking for parts and meters when getting into the heat of battle.

robogary This is as close as I've come to being "organized".  I got so tired of looking for tools that I finally learned to put them back where they belong.  Now I hate myself for always needing to go back for the same tools because I put them away before I'm done using them.  But at least I know where they are. Laughing

One thing I've done regarding this is putting all the tools and instruments I use the most, closest to me in my workbench or in a drawer next to me.

There are black holes on my workbench. They sit in layers to whisk objects to places I didnt lay the tools down.

I would love to say that this doesn't happen to me, but I just spent like 20 minutes looking for a transistor tester that I normally keep on my bench, that apparently decided to relocate itself while I was away.
