Top Tech Voices Podcast S2 E1: Mental Health & Technology

JoRatcliffe
JoRatcliffe 8 days ago

It’s time for the first episode of the Top Tech Voices podcast and Dr Jack Lewis shares how technology affects our minds, and how we can use technologies – including AI and virtual reality – to strengthen our minds and improve our lives.

Get comfortable, make a hot drink, and tune in for a conversation covering:

  • Creating a ‘Columbo moment’ when you are pitching something
  • How your smartphone can affect you just by being in your general area or in your peripheral vision
  • Why watching a TV show without multitasking is better for your brain
  • How to use AI as a constructively critical partner to enhance your thinking and avoiding ‘cognitive miserliness’

It feelSunglasseslike a small win every time, which keeps my motivation high. Has anyone else found success using these 'micro-goals' to stay focused?   SunglassesSunglasses

This episode really made me think. The phrase “use it or lose it” struck a chord with me – I had no idea how much my phone was impacting my brain, and I really liked the concept of VR and how it can help us understand each other better. I’m now attempting to use my phone less and be more present. BlushNo mobile phones

Its also amazing the pressure others put on a person to keep that phone attached to their body like a limb. Folks expect immediate response to phone or text.

From 8 pm to 8am my phone is in my mancave regardless where I am, unless Im out of the house.

This was a great episode! I really liked the parts about how our brains work. Since Dr. Jack mentioned specific studies and books, it would be amazing if you could list those references in the video description or at the end(or even here in the forum post). That way, we can easily look them up if we want to continue with the topic.

Also, including a short quiz would be really interesting! It would be a fun way to check what we've learned.Smile

This is it exactly. 'Like a limb' is the perfect way to describe that feeling of social obligation.

It’s the ultimate betrayal. You tell your brain 'just 2 minutes,' and then 40 minutes later you’ve actually learned something. My laziness is still filing a formal protest. 10/10 would recommend for. anyone else whose brain is a 'cognitive miser' looking for a loophole! No entry sign

The irony of me reading your comment about using phones less... while on my phone... is not lost on me. Skull But seriously, the VR perspective-shifting sounds like the only thing that can save us from becoming social hermits. May your 'present' moments be more interesting than my Twitter feed!

Yes I believe there should be a quiz, as it is an engaging and enjoyable way to assess what we have learned !!

Surprises can be both objective and subjective.
Indeed, I personally get upset with myself when I know that I worked, put in the effort, and in the end I got a bad surprise, but the situation itself can also contribute to this. But doesn't it hurt worse when you lose through your own fault?

Here's a funny (or maybe a little strange) thing, about the description of losing or winning a reward of the same value, I watch football and often hear the comparison "footballers" vs. "football players" (maybe translated from my language it doesn't seem different Sweat smile). A won football match means 3 points. Footballers at the end of a lost match often say (it's alomst a cliché, they stand with their heads bowed) "...that's it, we can only do so much...let's move on...", while true football players say "even if we lost today, that doesn't mean we won't get something better next time". What the latter are trying to say is that they know that there are losses, weekly, monthly or even daily. I think every ordinary person knows this.
Competition winners (generally speaking) know best what reward means.
