Fool's Errands Confessions (or Amnesty)

OwainM
OwainM 1 day ago

Prompted by a discussion I was having with cstanton  - and you'll have to trust me that this is how it started, and not that I was duped into one of these - I was intrigued to know of any Fool's Errands which you may have been on the giving or receiving end of in your time.

There's some common ones, such as asking an apprentice or new team member to fetch a left-handed screwdriver, tartan paint or a glass hammer, but that got me wondering if there's some examples that you may have come across in your particular fields.

Let me know, as I'm keen to avoid them all!

Go get tap water for one of these taps at the spare parts department (on the completely opposite side of a vast truck factory):

From my  Army days:  Blackout drive marker fluid.  50 feet of flight line.  Box of grid squares.  Left-handed lug wrench - for tires on the other side of the vehicle.  Metric adjustable wrenches.  Quart of elbow grease.  Or the items that existed but were just unobtanium: torque multiplier and heat tabs - back in the days of C-Rations.  I'm sure that I'm forgetting a few.

I did poo-poo the floppy disk notcher - until I was proven that it did exist.  I also was skeptical about left-handed threads on bolts.  I'm sure that I learned that one the hard way - by breaking the bolt and then having to extract it.  If you think a left-handed thread bolt is hard to find, try finding a right-handed bolt extractor - back before Amazon.

When we used to visit my great grandmother the neighborhood kids used to hang around my dad like bees to honey.  This was especially true when carried out repairs around her yard.  I remember my dad sending one especially persistent kid to go home to get him a sky hook.  This would have been funny enough but the kid kept coming back with a random assortment of stuff.  One of the things he returned with was a brush for cleaning barbecue grills.  Good times.

It's not related to electronics, but when my son started as bat boy for a local baseball team, the manager asked him to get the key to the batter's box.
